Since I was on a poolside vacation I had to pull out an Elin Hilderbrand read & this premise was perfect for my girl's trip.

The Five-Star Weekend followed a middle-aged woman, Hollis whose husband dies in a car accident. In the wake of her husband's death, Hollis hosts a weekend in Nantucket for 4 of her friends that have defined each time in her life: her childhood friend, her college roommate, her best friend from her married with kids life, and her middle-aged friend - but one of these friends is not like the other.
Plenty of secrets are unveiled this weekend and Hollis' daughter Caroline has it all recorded.

The entire book takes place in one weekend with some flashbacks expertly weaved in. The descriptions of food were divine and every time I read one of Hilderbrand's books I want to go to Nantucket. Quick & easy poolside read.

This book was a fun read, and it was interesting seeing all of the stars stories coming together. It really does feel like high school drama became a book. Which is kind of the point as we see the characters try to grow from their pasts. If you are anything like me, you will find that most of the time you can’t help but think what snooty bitches most of these characters are, and find it hard to believe they are going to have redeemable qualities. I’m glad they started to get their shit together near the end. The cast of characters was entertaining, the nosy neighbors of Nantucket adding their perspectives kept the story feeling authentically small town.

I really hated Matthew’s character, and the more I got to know him, the more I was so glad that he died in chapter one. Caroline may be given more grace, but I really disliked her for her attitude toward her mom. But the development between the two felt forced.

Given how pivotal Gigi’s role is, I was surprised how little she was featured, relative to  everyone else. I think it might’ve been because there were too many characters to focus on. Probably would’ve worked better with just three friends and a different title.

Epilogue felt cheesy. Book could’ve concluded without it.

So while I was  unsure what the big deal had been about this book, I thought it was cute the way the author highlighted her other book (The Hotel Nantucket) within this story.

A bubblegum ice cream beach read that covers serious topics yet manages to feel somewhat lacking in depth. Tackling death of a spouse, “cancel culture”,
coming out at a later age
, breast cancer, and infidelity (for it is an Elin Hildebrand book) while still having the same tone and mood of all Elin’s books puts it in beach books that should have a heart but seem somewhat stilted. Cool concept!
