A collection of related stories written by associates of the Oulipo - that group of formalist experimenters in literature. The first, eponymous, story is by Georges Perec, and each subsequent stories builds off that, and sometimes also off the other stories too. These shorts are, clearly, highly referential, they are often recursive (writing about writing (about writing...)), and many are written in a pseudo-academic style, which I guess is in the nature of the exercise's conceit.
Broadly, the stories fall into a few types - those which elaborate on Perec's initial story; those which, more independently, further its underlying theme; those which are more about Perec's writing of the story; and those about the whole phenomenon of its existance. Some of those are more interesting than others.
It rather felt like being at a (fairly long) dinner party where everyone else knows each other much better than you know anybody. You occasionally get their jokes or allusions, but you get the feeling that much is going over your head. As such, particularly as the book wore on, and the stories tended to the more 'meta', it felt like more and more of a chore. I think the footnotes could have helped explain some of the references, but maybe that would have spoiled the joke.
As a sidenote, I did enjoy Étienne Lécroart's story, where the references were to classic bande desinée stories, complete with a few cute illustrations.

Très courte nouvelle, plutôt sympathique, bien écrite, avec ce que j'identifie comme un humour discret et brutal, mais soyons franche, d'un intérêt limité, trop courte pour y accrocher vraiment ou construire une intrigue digne de ce nom. Un petit passe-temps pour le métro.

Kun haastattelen kirjailijoita, kysyn aina lopuksi suosituksia. Ne ovat usein kirjoja ja tätä kautta olen tutustunut jo useampaan kiinnostavaan teokseen. Viimeksi runoilija Riikka Simpura suositteli vuodenaikaan sopivasti Georges Perecin Talvinen matka -teosta, kehuen sitä ”hykerryttävän nerokkaaksi”.
Tämä Poesiavihkoissa julkaistu teos on hyvin pieni: kyseessä on pienessä vihkomuodossa vain yhdeksänsivuisesta novellista, joka kertoo nuoresta kirjallisuudenopettajasta Vincent Degraëlista. Hän löytää vuonna 1939 eräästä yksityisestä kirjastosta kiehtovan teoksen, nimeltään niin ikään Talvinen matka ja alkaa lukea sitä. Teos tuntuu ensin plagioivan useimpia merkittäviä ranskalaisrunoilijoita, kunnes Degraël oivaltaa, että Talvinen matka onkin julkaistu vuosikymmeniä ennen näitä mestariteoksia. Tämän kirjallisen sensaation selvitteleminen osoittautuu kuitenkin hyvin vaikeaksi.
Se jutun juonesta, lukekaa loput itse – novelli on todellakin varsin lyhyt, mutta hyvin oivaltava. Tästä vihkojulkaisusta huomattavan tekee se, että suomentaja Sami Sjöberg on kirjoittanut novellin jatkoksi jälkisanansa, joilla onkin sitten mittaa suunnilleen tuplasti novellin itsensä verran. Sjöberg sijoittaa Perecin novellin kontekstiinsa osana Oulipo-kirjallisuutta ja kertoo millainen kollektiiviromaani novellin pohjalta on rakentunut. Novellissa on pienestä koostaan huolimatta paljon tasoja, jotka olisivat kiitäneet reippaasti ohi ilman Sjöbergin selityksiä.
Lämmin suositus siis tälle pienelle vihkoselle. Talvinen matka ei kestä kauan, mutta tarjoaa raikkaita näkymiä kokeelliseen kirjallisuuteen. Tämän myötä myös päätökseni tilata Poesiavihkot tälle vuodelle tuntuu entistä paremmalta. Toivottavasti kohdalle osuu tällaisia helmiä!
