The Ten Thousand Doors of January by Alix E. Harrow

Compelling in moments - especially when exploring the worldview of a protagonist who's so much a racial outsider in America that she's unworldly, literally. Unfortunately, the interesting portions were stymied by predictability, slow pacing, and unconvincing accents on the part of the narrator (has she never heard an Italian?)

This is an unexpected 5 stars for me! I've read I think one other book by Alix Harrow and I liked it well enough, but wasn't blown away. I added this to my TBR but really only ended up reading it because it happened to be available on Libby while I was looking. This is exactly the type of story I've been wanting to read lately but I've been in a slump. Super interesting, unique, beautiful.

It’s a story within a story, and I don’t think you ever experience the MC actually going through a door. And if you do, it’s so late in the book that I couldn’t make it through.
