I really liked this YA graphic novel. I picked it up thinking I was getting a cute summer story and it gets so much deeper than just a cute story. I loved how it explained what had happened before while saying what was happening now. It was written very well and I love the illustrations as well. great for any kid/teen because it's an easy way to see some good morals!

Jennifer L. Holm does such a wonderful job in Sunny Side Up mixing a really tough situation with a very humorous story. It is the perfect balance. It isn’t over the top, because that would demean the serious topic, but it isn’t too serious either. And you can tell this is a story from Jennifer’s heart because the story is crafted so thoughtful with well-timed humor and well-timed conflict.

Read for kiddo, but was impressed with scope and handling of drug issues and comic books.

This is very much a book that you can't judge by the cover. It looks like a fun summer read with Sunny going to stay with her Grandpa in Florida for a little while. Some serious topics come up about substance abuse and what that is like for a kid as a bystander. It was both wonderful and heartbreaking.

It's a little didactic in some places, but I LOVED all the parts with Sunny and her grandfather.

I have really been loving reading graphic novels lately and this was one of the first ones I read in December. Middle Grade graphic novels is WHERE ITS AT guys!

The pictures in this novel are so fun and cute! And the story line is a bit intense. Sunny is sent to live with her grandfather over the summer because her parents need to be spend the summer helping her brother who is suffering from an addiction. I think this story does an AMAZING job at explaining to children what living with a sibling who is an addict. I really enjoyed it.

Such a cute book that touches on serious issues...issues that some of our students battle with in their homes whether it's with a parent or a sibling. I look forward to being able to recommend this book to my students. It shouldn't be hard as cute as the cover treatment is and my 4th graders love graphic novels so win-win!

This is a good book. Set in the 70s there are some things that kids may not get. I think it will inspire some good conversations. Some mature topics like addiction are addressed.

So great!! Love all the comic book stuff, the Florida retirement community captures, and the awesomeness of 1976. A true afternoon delight!!

The art style didn't quite hit the mark for me but the story was very very good. Would give it 4.5 stars if I could.
