Shubeik Lubeik is set in Egypt, in an alternate world which answers what if genies truly came out of bottles. Shubeik Lubeik literally translates into 'Your wish is my command'. In this world wishes can be mined and manufactured at different strengths, can be bought at different prices and come with fairly elaborate user manuals. Surprisingly, or not surprisingly, it doesn't make our world look very different. There are still divisions of wealth and power, religion and politics, corruption and wars, albeit with a few flying dinosaurs. Deena Mohammed weaves three interconnected stories in this set-up, focusing on different issues in each, and each is beautifully written and illustrated. I liked how she chose three protagonists of three different age groups for her stories. It truly widened the view of this world. It's a heartfelt book, with a carefully built world and relevant themes, and a perfect amount of humour.

Beautifully written story! She did such a great job. There is even a nonbinary main character and they are portrayed so well not in overdone ways. And their gender identity wasn’t their whole thing.

Beautiful artwork and wonderful commentary on colonialism, exploitation, mental health, and morality. Despite being translated from Arabic to English, it kept the original right to left reading order which I really enjoyed.
