A lot of emotions were felt reading this book starting off with horror and sadness which turned to relief and then to absolutely despondency. After the ending in The Block, I couldn't believe at first what I was reading but then as I read on, more secrets were uncovered and I quickly got back into this dystopian world and enjoyed reading about its characters.
Again, the romance isn't really a big feature and it's very subtle to the point I didn't think it necessary. Otherwise, a lot goes on in this book: we meet new characters, there are betrayals, there is a lot of destruction and it's very fast-paced throughout.
My main problem with this book and why it's my least favourite out of the three in the trilogy is that I absolutely do not like the ending. It ends on a feeling of hopelessness for the human race. I thought, after all that, humans still haven't learnt and I actually felt really sad the next day after finishing it because it's probably the most realistic part of the book.
This is too miserable and doesn't give me the ending I was so desperately hoping for. I really enjoyed The Loop series but this last one has created a fissure in my heart.

I didn’t want to put spoilers in this, but it’s just the way it ended up being because I have so much to comment, so I’m sorry.
Had me sobbing, crying and I don’t regret any of it.
I’m so JEALOUS of the friend group in this book. All of the characters are amazing, the story is amazing, and THE ENDING. I didn’t expect that at all.
I thought it would end in rainbows and unicorns. I WAS WRONG.
But I really did love this. It is one of a small part of YA books that doesn’t focus much on love, but rather on friendship.
If you want to cry read it. If you want to laugh, read it. If you want to feel something, THIS. This is the one for you, because it was for me, and it doesn’t happen often.
I’d say I read a lot, but rarely I feel so emotionally involved as with this book.
I enjoyed the fact that Pander was still alive, I’ll always be in love with her.
But yeah, I can’t wait for another Ben Oliver book, because this trilogy has my heart.
If someone told me I could meet Luka and his friends, but I had to sacrifice, I WOULD.
I love them. They feel so real.
I got so attached to this book I think I’m actually gonna get a tattoo of it sometime.
But yeah, lmk what you think, because I love it.
Have the best day <3

Synopsis for book 1: “Life inside The Loop- the futuristic death row for teens under eighteen- is one long repetitive purgatory. But when news of the encroaching chaos in the outside world reaches the inmates and disorder begins to strike, the prison becomes the least of their worries.” In Book 3, the battle against the powerful artificial intelligence Happy continues, following our same band of rebels.
Throughout this series, Ben Oliver explores what it means to be human, and how easily we can become monsters. Does empathy makes us human, or is it culture? Is it free will, or is it connection to others? With so much technology around, does ‘being human’ now have a different meaning?
Oliver repeatedly draws attention to what separates us from the machines and monsters, only making you love the ragtag group of rebels even more for all their heart and ferocity.
New addition to the group, android Royston Dent makes an excellent addition with his sarcastic commentary (which MUST be read in a frightfully English accent).
This book is extremely fast paced, full of dicey action and twists. You never want to put it down. I loved it. I only wish it was longer! For me I felt like it could have been fleshed out by even a hundred pages, but I’d have especially loved the epilogue to have been fleshed out a little more. I felt like I needed more closure. I also really felt like the main couple needed more page time for me to truly connect with them!
3.5 stars. I didn’t love this one quite as much as the first two. I think there was just so much ground to cover to tie up the plot neatly that there wasn’t that much time to focus on the friendships and relationships and jokes I loved so much in the first two.
I didn’t love that the first third of the book was in Chester (Aka Chilly) POV and then he’s dropped from the rest of the story until the very end. I get what the author was trying to do after Luka seems well and truly dead but it felt a little weird to introduce this amazing super genius and then barely mention him again until the very end.
A really small this nitpick was the weird several pages spend on discussing overcoming addiction that Luka has with a friend. It felt…weirdly preachy and out of place? Just cause this book did not deal with addiction anywhere else? Maybe Ben Oliver felt bad that he made a chunk of the human race get saved because of drug addiction and wanted to back track? Idk
Also, it felt like Luka’s (actually, final, for actually real) death was a weird way to end his character arc. He struggled so much with PTSD and depression in this book (which I appreciated being noted) it would have been nice for him to actually get to see the world a little brighter. Like he never had an issue with sacrificing himself, it was always kind of a little detrimental to his mental health, so for it to be the last thing he does (again) was a weird mixed message.
Over all I think this was the best Ben Oliver could do to finish up a very high concept series with insane stakes and literally impossible odds in a way that made sense. It was still a fun ride, even if the ending didn’t quite live up the promise of the whole series. Thanks to Edelweiss for the eArc!
