I tried. It's been almost a year since I picked up and then put back down this book.
I continued to hear great things, so I decided to give it a second chance. Something I never do. Usually, if by page 50 a book can't hold my interest or I see it going no where then I won't waste any more of my time. DNF and then into the donate pile.
I managed to trudge through to page 170 this time and I'm throwing in the towel. I just can't. I can't see why this is getting rave reviews. I think that this book isn't for me and that's okay.
I couldn't connect with the characters, I found the, incredibly annoying and superficial. The plot was weak and overdone.
It's just not my thing.
medium-paced

I enjoyed this book. Unfortunately I moved halfway through and ended up putting it on hold for almost a month. However, once I had time to pick it back up I flew through the rest of it. I went into it knowing that it was a series and so I was aware that it would most likely end with a โ€œcliff-hangerโ€ of sorts. I liked the way it ended because now Iโ€™ll be drawn into the next one to see what happens.

Would have gotten a higher rating had there been a dual POV ๐Ÿ˜”

When I first saw this at an airport, I thought it was about a woman detective, but yes I knew it would
have erotic parts to it. Well, it is NOT anything to do with detective work (I am embarrassed that I thought that to begin with), but it does have erotic parts. Over and over.
Yes, I read Fifty Shades trilogy and several of the Crossfire books. This book, Hardwired, is
plain and simple a very similar book to those. Woman falls for billionaire, they have (lots of) sex,
they break up, they get back together. Lather, rinse repeat.
Nothing new to see here, and in fact it is a lot more boring than those other erotic books..

It's better than others of its kind, but not by much.
The guy is still controlling and doesn't listen to the woman at all. He doesn't tell her anything about his life but wants her to tell him everything. He gets jealous of every single man she encounters. She is sexually assaulted. All of the tropes are here.

I found the guy a bit less creepy than in others, though, and that's why it gets two stars. I liked the protagonist at the very beginning, but as the book progressed I liked her less. She's aware that his behaviour is creepy, calls him out on it, but goes with it anyway. That doesn't make it better. Just because she's aware and voices it doesn't mean it's all good. It's not enough. He never changes and she's fine with it, even though she knows what he does is not normal.

I read this for Novelicious's book club for August. I will have more and better developed thoughts, but this is just an initial reaction.

Whilst the bedroom scenes are hot, this was problematic for me - as so often in the billionaire trope, Blake has some serious issues as a hero. He's controlling, manipulative and he seems determined to take away Erica's agency. Which is disappointing, because she's an interesting heroine - she's smart, she is competant, she has overcome issues and difficulties. I was hoping that this would be a hot and sexy relationship of equals, but it didn't really work out like that from my perspective.
