It took me so long to read this book because the beginning was not very interesting, and had way too many scientific words in it. But about 200 pages in things started to get interesting and the science all started to make sense. Maybe this makes me sound dumb, but 🤷🏼♀️
Ok Folks, I got this book for Mothers Day, I had no idea it existed, my husband found it for me.
I know I say 'oh this book is good or that book is good'
THIS BOOK, However, is literally the best book I have read in a LONG time.
Dan Brown's other books, the Lost Symbol, The Da Vinci Code, although really good, have nothing on this book. It's on a whole different level.
This story centers around a modern day presidential election, where NASA has become the key political issue for the presidents current rival for office.
Conveniantly, NASA finds a meteorite in a solid block of ice in the Arctic, which will not only save their own butts, but will save the office of the current president, and keep NASA from privatization of other civil groups that have the monetary abilities to go into space as well, which NASA doesn't share.
It goes through the dirty tactics of presidential elections, the lengths that some candidates go to in order to win, and the lengths the candidates supporters will go to in order for their man to win.
This book twists and turns at almost every angle, it certainly threw me for a loop, the ending is superb. You have no clue who the bad guy is until the end, even though you are pretty damn sure you do, you don't.
It's interesting, it's thrilling, it's fast paced, I was never bored with it.
The book I have, was $10. Which is MORE then an acceptable price for this book.
The only issue I have, is not with the story itself, but with the version of book Eric got.
It's called a 'Pocket Premium Edition'. It's supposed to be easier to read with higher quality and value over traditional mass market books. I didn't like it. The book is so thick, and so narrow page width wise, that it was hard for me to keep the pages open enough to read comfortably, without hurting the binding. So even though I've only read the book once so far, the binding looks much more used.
Nothing to do with the story though!
It was absolutely incredible, and I highly suggest this as a book to buy. Not even library, Buy it. You will most definitely read it more then once. As I am sure I am going to!

I am loathe to admit I've read every one of his books and enjoyed them immensely. His hilariously formulaic every-chapter-ends-with-a-cliffhanger kept me up very late at night. Terrible and a ton of fun.
Rachel Sexton is a White House intelligence analyst who also has an estranged father running to become president. Her father has based his campaign on NASA over-spending and the need to privatize the space industry. Meanwhile, NASA is ready to come out with their most important announcement ever, something found up on the Milne ice shelf. Third parties have authenticated the find and Rachel is brought up to brief the White House staff. Rachel soon wonders if this is all too good to be true and whether NASA may have manufactured evidence to try to save themselves.
This book took a lot of time to get to the 'what'. What was it that NASA found up on the Milne ice shelf? I was intrigued though, wanting to know what it was, and blew through the beginning of the book rather quickly. Once this has been told, the remainder of the book pretty much requires you to suspend belief. Not because of what NASA found, but because of how it all unravels and who is responsible.
Beyond this, my main problem with the book is geography. It's only mentioned once, but the Milne ice shelf is off of Ellesmere Island. And guess where Ellesmere Island is? CANADA. Do you really think that the Canadian government would let NASA and the US government waltz in to Canada because they found something historic, have only US government employees and American scientists there, and take credit for the finding? If you said yes, you should switch America and Canada in that sentence and ask yourself the question again. Canada finds something of significant historical value in the USA. Would the USA let them on American land without any American supervision or credit? I think not.

Meh, not bad but it didn't bring me to the edge of my seat. Friends have raved about this book but it didn't capture my attention they way it seems to have theirs. Also the mild romantic back story between Rachel and Mike, I felt, was entirely unnecessary and a bit distracting/annoying.
