I could not put this down. Rasheed was a total bastard. I’m surprised that one of them didn’t shoot him earlier. Especially when he forced Leila to put her daughter into the orphanage but he was ok keeping his son at home and spoiling him. Could they not report him to the taliban for buying a tv so they punished him instead of them.
When the author listed the rules of living in taliban led Afghanistan, it wasn’t really a surprise to me but imagining following them, I would have definitely been beaten.
Tariq is a hero, I just wish Mariam had survived too, and either lived with them as a mother or another wife. But I am glad that the women’s relationship grew into something beautiful. I think this helped them both survive for so long.
Jalil was such a loving father but why did he not stand up to his wives.
Mariam always had a tough life beginning to end, but she always won, she learned to cope. I did think her mother was just a bitter woman but some of the bitter lesson she taught her did help her and keep things in perspective.
This is so staying,on my bookshelf for a second read, can’t wait to read more of his books
