part four made me tear up in the middle of science class

My heart went out for these poor ladies. To think that this culture is like that. Plus what they had to endure was awful.

Wonderfully written. I really felt the loss and joy from the characters. It's a wonderful story of friendship and heartache and gives you a wonderful insight into what life was and is in Afghanistan and how differently people there think about what's going on around them.

“One could not count the moons that shimmer on her roofs,
Or the thousand splendid suns that hide behind her walls.”

The storytelling is beautiful. Set with Afghanistan in turmoil as the backdrop, the lives of two women from two different generations intersect.

This is a frustrating read because the bleak lives of the main characters are not entirely due to their own actions, but rather the cruelty of men and the hand that life has dealt.

From the beginning, I sympathised with Mariam and her circumstances and I love the bond that develops between Mariam and Laila. I wanted the best for these two characters, who are so strong after enduring so much.

A Thousand Splendid Suns is a moving read.
