and fuck men

APRIL 2017 BOOK CLUB:

I LOVED this book. I loved how the story covered significant Afghan history, something that I knew little about. I loved the juxtaposition of Mariam's upbringing (shame and lack of self-esteem she was taught) and Laila's (empowering and hopeful). For both people, I felt incredibly deep despair for their horrible situation. Ah the lack of women's rights in Afghanistan during the Taliban rule infuriated me. I researched so many different articles and studies because of this book (which also inspired my next book-- the Handmaid's Tale).

I was also inspired by Mariam's sacrifice. Truly, I believe that her character was an angel on the earth. The chapter of her death was gut-wrenching for me. There was so much that hurt in this book, but it was a hurt that needed to be felt by every reader. Despite the pain of the decades in the book, the fact that there was somewhat of a "happy" ending for Laila and her sweet family made the pain more tolerable. I don't think I could have handled it all if it was a sadder (and maybe more realistic?) ending. Thank you, Housseini, for that little beacon.

I cant remember the last time a book made me feel so many emotions

This book was incredible, but devastating from beginning to end. An absolutely beautiful story that I don't know if I'll ever be able to read again.
