This book has been sitting so long in my bookcrossing to be read pile that I had quite forgotten it was book three in a series. So, not having read books 1 & 2, I found the first couple of chapters hard going as the earlier events were not fully recapped right away.

However, I found myself drawn into the story once I understood the facts I was missing.

This is a fantastic space opera. I will defiantly be going back to read the prior books.

But, I really shouldn't have expected anything less from such a talented author.

With the romance still far away on the horizon and Ky getting to grips with being in command AND Gracie being a badass this novel has everything I wanted out of it.

Enjoyed Aunt Grace’s post fruit cake chef role (what a delightful start!) and Ky’s struggle to understand the difference between having a feeling and acting on that feeling. Still enjoying the mercantile elements that balance the space battles (maybe a few too many of those for my taste generally, but the series is called Vatta’s War)

Like the first two installments of the series, Engaging The Enemy (Book 3 of Vatta’s War) is a fun diversion — which is the entire reason I read science fiction. While it wasn’t as action-packed as the second book, and didn’t focus on character development as either of the first two, there is still plenty of ground covered.

Kylara Vatta remains a character who I can at least partly identify with, realistic with her self-doubts and ability to overcome them.

This is also the first of the three books to introduce a major surprise/twist — (no spoilers!) it involves genetics and major characters.

(I have published a longer review on my website.)

I like it.

I like all the details of trying to organize a space force and the problems from various sides Ky runs into while trying to do so.

I like the different POVs - Ky, Stella and Grace. I love how badass Grace is and how she protects the family.

I like that the focus has been on finding allies and the different rules and cultures of the various space stations and not fighting (even though - I loved the one big space battle that has been there).

I kind of expected the big plot twist when certain things have first been mentioned - I just had my money on the wrong person. XD

I'm a bit sad to see Rafe going but I think, we'll meet him again. Same with Stella.

Ky - I love her!

On to the next part! :)

I continue to enjoy this series more than I should, even though the books do tend to run together. Less than a week after finishing this one, I can't really remember what happened in it. But it was fun. :-)
