Over Us, Over You

Love Whitney G's stuff!

I enjoyed reading 2nd chance books like these. The plot is good but some parts need further development.

I'm frustrated with how Hayley acted while her brother took her in and it just showed me how she failed herself (plus her friend) in the bankrupt cafe. She seems a bit ditzy with her work habit but shows a lot of potential in the relationship and "grown-up" thoughts/philosophies that I wished she was a more balanced heroine. Also, she totally couldn't remember what happened at the rooftop auction party? She was that irresponsible when she's supposed to represent her brother as a favor while he took her on with supporting her? I cannot get how she can think of being this irresponsible. Granted that her mother is no role-model...I would think she would try her best to be a good employee for her brother's sake, especially with no special treatment as she asked. With what she got away within the book, she's already getting special treatment by acting like a brat.

Cory is okay but has internal issues of his own self-esteem of being deserving of Hayley. I'm glad that he did own up to it even before the relationship happened though he tried denying it the next day. He promised to protect her but the decision he made to break her heart was totally the opposite after trying to "stand by Hayley" but when push came to shove by Jonathan, he caved!! He literally made her cry! So so wrong!

There is more development between Cory and Hayley that I appreciate but not enough history shown for Cory's side also. I guess we just assume that he's a playboy as what everyone in the story says/claims.

The other supporting characters, aside from Angela, Jonathan, and Kelly, leaves us all in the dark i.e. why Jonathan replaced Cory with Gary to be his best man at the wedding. I think you would need to read through the book on Jonathan's story with Claire to also understand the relationship with the daughters. Anyways, I channel my energy to just Hayley and Cory.

Overall, I would recommend this book...but try to read through the Fallen for Mr. Statham series so as to get the working relationship of the characters that come up in this book. I think I would have fully appreciated it more if I did.

Worth the wait.

Jonathan and Claire!!!! Ok, not really but there are some glimpses. I had no idea this was Jonathan’s sister and his BF story ... I read the blurb but didn’t connect the dots. Plus, it’s Whitney and you are a one click for me.

While this story goes back and forth in years to tell the story ... I don’t think it suffered. I enjoyed the story and there was no lack of steam. There was growth and Jonathan.

My only wish for 2018 are longer stories and republished works that I never had a chance to read and the follow up book to the Beautiful series.

PS .... Whitney, I will be heartbroken if you stop writing but I understand you need to follow your bliss.

Another Whitney G Love

Corey, Hailey’s Brothers Best Friend, would never admit that Hayley was really more of his best friend when they were younger, and that wasn’t isn’t only secret. When Hailey comes crashing back into his life it changes everything. Hayley and Corey are perfect together, but keeping a secret from her brother isn’t easy for either of them. Jonathan is an overprotective brother who wants nothing but the best for his little sister. I loved everything about this novel. I would love to have a second novel about them.

Unfortunately, I found this book to be a little underwhelming. I've read a couple books by this author and really liked them, so I was looking forward to listening to this one. One of my biggest problems was that I didnt really feel the connection between Hayley and Corey at all. I found Hayley to be flakey and unlikeable. Also, the timeline jumped around back and forth throughout the book, and while usually I don't mind it, it made this book seem kind of disjointed and choppy.
The narrators were great. I always enjoy Maxine Mitchell, and Lorenzo Matthews was new to me but I will definitely listen to more of his work! He was great!

I love the brother's best friend trope and this was a fun read. Hayley and Corey were cute together and I liked that he treated her pretty well while they were dating. I didn't love Hayley, the way she totally blew off the really nice job her brother gave her and caused other people to have to pick up her slack and didn't even care. She was pretty irresponsible and I wanted her to grow up. Corey was a good guy and took care of Hayley. The narration was well done and it had good pacing. Last audiobook of 2019!

-The Good. That blurb and cover. Top notch. It sold me on the story and I one-clicked, like the greedy book-hoarder that I am. I love the friends to lovers trope, I love the best friend’s sister angle, I was intrigued by it all. I went in with high hopes, because I liked Ms. G’s Mid-Life Love and I was pleasantly surprised that this book is tied to that series. Hayley is Jonathan’s sister (the hero from Mid-Life Love) and Corey is his best friend. With that start and the tease that is their first encounter and kiss, I was ready for a bumpy but entertaining ride...

-The Bad. Then the characters ruined it. This story is told in dual perspective of Hayley and Corey, with occasional switches from the past to present day and I gotta say this is the second book this month where I am compelled to point out that

Hayley was off-putting from the start, and I was side-eying the way she took advantage of her brother’s generosity, never apologizing, never growing before we even got into the heart of the story. Now, I could have handled that because some of the best characters are ones who start off as a jackass. It’s the journey, right? You get to see them figure out their dumbassery, and become the better for it.

But nope, even towards the end, she was immature, irresponsible, entitled and completely dependent on others for her success. She couldn’t take the time to learn the business side of achieving her dreams, she just got lucky and fell in love with and was related to, two men who could help her. It was the exact opposite of growing. Corey wasn’t better, though his dumbassery I could see from a mile away would end up being the "obstacle" at the end of this romance. When given the chance to do the right thing, he didn’t. Until he does and it was all sunshine and puppies.

-Everything in Between. I did read the whole book, because when they weren’t irking me by their childishness, their UST at the beginning kept me hoping for more. I liked the visits with old favorites like Jonathan, although the reminders of Claire’s bridezilla moments I could have done without.

The Bottom Line 1.5 stars
Nope, it's a pass from me. It started with alot of promise and ended with alot of eye-rolling (by me). I wouldn’t say no to more from this author, but I was very disappointed in this book, so I can’t recommend this.

So...this is awkward.

I'm a huge fan of Whitney G's short & steamy stories. I can't quit them. So, naturally when I realized she has a new book out and it's about a girl who's in love with her brother's best friend, I just had to read it. Plus that blurb was enticing. It was hot and exactly what I wanted to read that I was already fanning myself in anticipation.

Unfortunately, all that's good about this book stayed on that blurb and didn't translate to the overall story. The execution felt off. It's rushed and all over the place.

I know this is a short book and I'm not exactly expecting complex characterization but this book didn't even try to at least make us care. The characters are nothing but caricatures and I couldn't connect or care enough to root for them. And it's a real shame because I love this author's previous works.

I really wish I could give this a more positive review but I can't. I would suggest you guys try her other books and not this because this doesn't quite represent what Whitney G has to offer.

“Hayley?” he whispered.
“Yeah?” I kept my eyes shut.
“I’m going to send you an email tomorrow, and I’m going to tell you exactly what happened between us tonight.”
“Um hmmm.” I was dozing off.
“It’s going to be short and to the point, and I’m going to send it to protect the both of us.” He paused. “But if by chance you remember what I’m about to say—because I can’t believe I’m about to say this shit and I swear I’ll deny it... You’re honestly the only girl I’ve ever cared about, and I know it’s been years and we’ve grown in different ways, but I never stopped caring about you. And if you want to try us now, and get to know each other again, I wouldn’t say not right now. I would say yes.”

this was so cute and i enjoyed it a lot. it’s exactly what i needed and i’m happy i picked it up.
