Sigh. I don't want to nitpick on the realism of this book, because it's fiction. And honestly I don't want to read romance novels that are too realistic. But unfortunately I am a scientist in real life and this depiction of scientists is about as far from the truth as you can get. If you want to get into stereotypes, the natural scientists (biology, chemistry, physics) are the ones who are obsessed with proving results with data - the characters in this book are in the psychology department. Since psychologists study human behavior, they don't usually have the stereotype of being socially awkward - that's usually reserved for the natural scientists who can hole up in a lab and avoid human contact.

I really struggled with Hazel and Corbin in the beginning of the book because they were portrayed as these very stereotypical nerdy and socially awkward scientists. Hazel kept going on and on about her obsession with data to support a theory and it drove me insane. I honestly gave up after a bit and didn't think I would finish the book. Eventually I came back to it and finished it. Aside from the scientist stereotypes, it wasn't bad.
