3.5 stars

I really liked this... I know that 3.5 stars might not make you think that, but I did. It's always hard with novellas for me though. You're kind of plopped into the middle of what's going on and have to go from there.

We first meet Sophie and Carter at high school - they don't interact though, instead they kind of ignore each other at school finding it easier to keep that part of their life separate from their harsh realities.

I really enjoyed both Sophie and Carter in this short story. They are both dealing with some very heavy issues in their lives and with graduation around the corner they are both looking forward to being able to make something of themselves.

Carter's mom is a bit on the crazy side after years of abuse by her husband, and Carter took his share of the abuse as well. Sophie is raising her siblings "the littles" on her own at the age of 18 because her mother just can't be bothered. Not exactly ideal for these teens and they've had to grow up very quickly.

Although Sophie and Carter are only neighbors they end their days with each other sitting on Sophie's porch... Simply reconnecting with each other and offering the necessary support to push through the next day and the next.

I really liked their friendship. No questions asked they were there for each other no matter what. Despite all the ugly they had to deal with, there was this beauty in the relationship they had with each other.

Like I said, I really liked this, but it's hard for me to rate novellas, if you're looking for something quick with some wonderfully written characters this might just be perfect for you.

Completely beyond amazing! I could really sympathize with the characters and the point of views were just amazing!

I loved the synopsis for this book and it kind of reminded me of Forbidden by Tabitha Suzema, just without the incest part. The two main characters have big shoes to fill being the head of their households and somehow find solace in each other.

Carter’s mother has a mental illness which leaves her unable to care for herself. The illness was brought on by too many blows to the head by Carter’s father. Not only did Carter’s dad beat his mom, but he was also abused as a child until he put a stop to it.

Sophie’s mother is a prostitute/drug addict and leaves them for days and weeks on end by themselves with Sophie caring for her 3 siblings. She has to contact her mother’s pimp to get access to her mother to beg for money to get groceries, rent and other necessities.

Late at night, after everyone else is snug in their beds, Sophie & Carter find some peace just swinging on the porch swing with each other. They pretend not to be friends at school, they wouldn’t want to blow their cover. No one else knows what their home life is like and they like it that way. They only can rely on each other.

I enjoyed reading about their blossoming relationship. It was beautiful to see when they realized how they really felt about each other.

I loved both Sophie & Carter. They were trying to be so strong for each other and truly had a real love. Even if it took them many years to realize it.

The stories that each of these characters went through was excruciatingly damaging, but Ms. Fine wrote their stories with elegance and was able to tell their tale with grace. The book was a short read and I would definitely recommend it.

They’re not really homes. More like houses where we sleep.

Where we eat—if we’re lucky. Where we cry and fight.

Where we bleed and break. Where we cower and scream.

Where we give up. Where we sigh.

Where we barely survive.

78 pages... 78 pages of quietly powerful words. I started this book thinking, alright a nice short love story that's not going to have any impact on me. Boy was I wrong!
Chelsea Fine has produced a beautiful little book that will break your heart and give you hope all at the same time.
Sophie and Carter are both fantastic characters. Characters you wish were real people... who probably are real people in fact.
I loved how she switched between their POV's and how parallel their thoughts were. Nothing was really sappy, she did a great job at poking fun at the parts that otherwise would have been sappy. You've got to love a writer who recognizes fluff and has fun with it!

A very light read and an easy one. so sweet and lovely. The kind you can finish in one hour and feel good afterwards in a very cheesy, yet satisfying, way

Sophie and Carter takes you through the eyes of two best friends just trying to keep their lives from falling apart while denying their feelings for each other. It was short and sweet, emotionally charged, and beautifully written.
