I think this one kind of got away from itself. It wrapped up really easily for all the build up and like, how did her dad not notice what was happening until it was almost too late when his whole thing was protecting her from all the stuff that happened when she was a baby?

This was such a lovely story about life, death, grief, and being remembered. I think it tackles these questions in such an age appropriate way for late elementary and middle schoolers. Definitely one I’d add to a classroom library.

I can't put my finger on why this didn't work for me; sadly everything from the overly cartoonish art to the sloppy way the plot weaved in Chinese mythology didn't work for me.

▷ Representation: Chinese protagonist and secondary charcters.
