After learning a bit of history about this book I was very skeptical. It seems that Doyle picked the character back up to make money. This is a shameful practice in modern time and I would expect the quality to deteriorate and the fans to turn on it. But to the contrary, this book has its lulls like other short story collections but also contains some of the best. The actual return of Holmes in the first story is great and then it dips for a while, but then unique cases start to emerge. I particularly like Holmes' philosophical musings on the human condition and his work to resolve certain disputes outside of the law. He is frequently put in a bind between his conscience and the law and sides with the former.

Took my time getting through this volume since there were so many stories, and I wanted time to appreciate them all. Reading these is fun, but I do agree with Sherlock's assessment that Watson leaves out too many details of how the cases are solved. ;) I would like more of the forensic science involved included.

The most interesting of the collections of Sherlock I have read so far. Finally an explanation for Sherlock's """death""". Most of the stories here were memorable which is more than I can say for over half of the stories in the previous installations.

I enjoyed pretty much every story in here. It has been my favourite so far of the series I'm reading.
Interesting stories to relax by, not quite, in general, as edifying as the stories in his earlier volume (the adventures...) from before the big event, but still entertaining.
