It's wild thinking about how iconic the Grinch is in relation to Christmas when, unlike most all other Christmas traditions, he isn't like... *based* on anything. There's no decades/centuries/millennia of backstory that slowly evolved into his current state. Think of like, Rudolph: Sure the character is new, but he's based on Santa's Reindeer: a longer standing concept.
Seuss just thought up this fucked up little guy one day, and it was so good that it's now part of Christmas. Love that for the Grinch.
Also, I have to say that the ideal way to read it is reading it aloud, even if just to yourself. Giving the Grinch a funny voice also helps.
