Truly inspiring. I know that sounds trite but there it is. This man’s story is unique in the history of the world so far as I know.

A very inspiring read

Really, really spectacular and eye-opening.

What can I say that hasn't been said a million times. This story was amazing, extremely readable, and incredibly inspiring. The blueprint of how a biography is done

This is a must-read for anyone who cares about our world. Mandela is a born-leader, whose original path to actively participating in the liberation of his people led him to jail. It is what he did with that jail-time that makes him one of history's greatest leaders. He learned forgiveness, strength through understanding, and focusing on the end goals. No prisoner can ever really influence much but his own attitude, but Mandela's willingness to strategically focus on self-improvement as the only path to genuine freedom is remarkable. I recommend reading this together with Viktor Frankl for a double dose of courage and the power of finding meaning in life - no matter what the external circumstances. "Courage is not the absence of fear. Courage is overcoming it."
emotional hopeful inspiring fast-paced

This is a story of a great man who was surrounded by great people fighting for a great cause... This autobiography is told as a story of how Nelson Mandela was a stubborn and determined person who saw great injustice in South Africa and wanted changes by whatever means necessary. Throughout the book he stayed true to his principles that he didn’t just want freedom for people like him or less freedom for people unlike him, he wanted freedoms for everyone without any conditions. He sacrificed everything to make this happen and suffered dearly because of it.. he was a very humble man who wasn’t interested in the spotlight, but was a true leader in the fight for change against a nationalist agenda that repressed people based on the colour of their skin.. the cover of the book says this should be read by everyone alive and I couldn’t agree more!

Excellent book - very informative and educational without being boring. A lot of Mandela's time in prison seems to be glossed over, especially compared with earlier parts that were almost told week-by-week, but then.... when you're in prison for 27 years, I guess there's often not much to report except for the "big things."

Apparition: Read a book set somewhere you want to travel

I am humbled. Today’s politicians don’t come close

Nelson Mandela is one of the most remarkable men of the 20th century and because of this his life and his legend are often intertwined. During his life his supporters and opponents both shaped his narrative to help further their agendas and because of this there were often conflicting ideas as to who exactly he was. There was a time where he became more myth than man and because of this, Mandela felt compelled to pen his own autobiography in 1995 shortly after becoming president of South Africa. As a result of this, we have an opportunity to learn about Mandela in his own words: From growing up in a rural village to his time in school to his life as a lawyer to his introduction to the ANC to this time in prison to his eventual ascendancy to the presidency. By learning about Mandela's actions through his own words, the reader is able to see his development from a shy, timid boy to an outgoing confident man who became the father of his nation. I highly recommend this book for anyone interested in the history of Mandela or in the development of a world leader.
