This took a long while to finish. All puns intended. On a serious note...His life. His story. His words. This was fantastic. I’m mostly a fiction reader so taking on such a large autobiography was a challenge. This gem was over 600 pages. It took me a while to work through it bit by bit, but I am so glad I did. There’s something so emotional about getting the story from the source full of their emotions, thoughts, and feelings. A truly remarkable man that inspired countless people.

One of the best autobiographies I have ever read - it read like a page turner. It is full of detail, but I did not get bogged down by the detail. I have a whole new appreciation for the Nelson Mandela and the apartheid era. Must read!

So I think I’m on a bit of a roll with reading about political activists but damn was this good.

Nelson Mandela is honest, not afraid to point out his weaknesses, and unfailingly hopeful in his goals in this autobiography, most of which was written during his more than two decades in jail.

This is about one mans quest to free his country from oppression, to do whatever it takes to fight for freedom. There is a lot of politics, but it doesn’t take away from the narrative of the story.

Incredibly inspiring, well written, and informative.

I love how straightforward Mandela is; his ability to report his own history without pride or defense continually surprises and amazes me.

Chapeau bas, Monsieur Mandela.

slow-paced

OK I think the people who are calling this a "page turner" are lying, but in the end it doesn't matter. Sure, the book is loong and it's packed full of names and locations and party affiliations and other details that aren't necessarily engaging, but I can only imagine that was done for historical record keeping and to pay respects to all the people and groups who contributed to the fight against apartheid. But who cares, you can't help but respect the man, the story, and even the extremely thorough writing.
