I took a week long break after reading the first half because I was so frustrated by the cheating trope. I feel like the book wouldn’t have lost any emotional depth if it lost the cheating thread- that said I loved the pining enough that it felt like 4* in the end. Oh, but I wish the ending had been drawn out more so that we could really see Jae and Rapha settle into life together.

I waited a while to read this one. And honestly, I’m not sure I could’ve brought myself to read it on my own. But the GWLBWLB Book Club picked Hamartia for May, and I will forever be indebted to those ladies for picking it because I was missing something special.
LEMME MENTION: the editing was lacking. SO many missing words and misused words it was rather distracting. Borderline a whole star but definitely a solid half star worth of disappointment.
Raphael is the lead singer of rock band, Dead Poets, and crazy about K-Pop idol, Jae, from the moment he sees him. He’s awkward and confused and obsessed. Oh gawd, was he OBSESSED. He’s also engaged to a woman and he’s “not gay.” Wowee, is this story messy asffffff. But it’s also SO GOOD. Jae is direct and honest to a fault and makes Raphael own what he wants from the beginning. His vulnerability was touching and added a lot of depth. But it also caused some problems. Understandable, but heartbreaking.
If one word could summarize Rapha and Jae, it would be *precious.* These two are friggin precious. Yea, the stigma and cheating was atrocious and wrong, BUT sometimes the heart just knows and wants and while most people might ignore it, these two couldn’t. So you’ll either love it, or you won’t. The story has this heavy vibe from start to finish and I felt it in the epilogue as well. Much better than I thought it would be and with a bit more editing, it wouldn’t be near perfect.

Raphael is a famous American rockstar. Jaehyun is a famous K-pop idol. The pair first meet under less than desirable circumstances in a Paris bathroom two years prior. Raphael is disrespectful and rude, yet something pivotal and significant happens to him the first time he sees Jaehyun. It sparks a two year obsession on Raphael’s part about Jaehyun, where he tries to understand why he feels and acts the way he does. His confusion and realization(s) unravel in real time and it’s poetic to witness.
This book blew me away. It’s so sincerely and beautifully written. It’s both heartbreaking and heartwarming. The emotional upheaval/ turmoil leaps off the page. Scarlett Drake is so talented in her craft. The way she writes is incredible. This book is such a stunning look at obsession, lust, romance, and falling in love. Every word drips with intention and care. You feel Raphael’s struggle and delight at his life-changing, soul-shifting event. There’s so much rawness and vulnerability in Raphael. Jaehyun keeps things close to the vest. Still waters run deep in that man. It’s striking when he (finally) lets Raphael in.
The way things between Raphael and Jae transform from enemies (one-sided) to friends (sort of) to lovers is fascinating. I love that Drake takes her time building the romance between the MCs. The fascination is there from the beginning. The lust is front and center. The romance, however, is nurtured. There are so many deep, nuanced, honest conversations in this book (and not just between the love interests). There’s so much passion in this novel. The connection between Rapha and Jae is palpable. I appreciated that this wasn’t an easy journey for either man in terms of everything else going on in their lives. That said, once everything is set in motion, the draw between these two MCs is unavoidable. Both men have to work hard at their HEA, but gah, do they both deserve it! The epilogue is sweet and inspiring.
The side characters in this book are so well developed. I actually liked Camille. (I’m so happy that Camille and Raphael were able to work things out in a way that best suited them). I adore Raphael’s mother. Cleo is lovely. Kai is protective. This really is a captivating and compelling story. You should read it. I’m definitely looking forward to future books from this author!
