A life story told directly to readers, much like the style of David Copperfield, if David Copperfield had been born in Kentucky.Very lovable narrator, with theological musings similar to those of the narrator in Gilead by Marilynne Robinson.

In other words … just sit back and enjoy the story. I’m not a big fan of Berry’s writing — too slow and meandering for me. Yet this book is a good look at 1930s rural Americana.

The pace was too slow for my taste and it was basically all character and no plot. Hopefully I’ll be ready for this type of book another time. Until then, I’ll stick to Berry’s essays.
