Oh my god. This is legitimately one of the saddest book I have ever read, and of course it’s for children. I hate the fact that I think I am beginning to understand the true meanings hidden behind these whimsical illustrations and idiosyncratic plotlines. I am sure that this book will only get more depressing with time. This book convinces you that existence is a thin blanket over loss, or its desolate cousin, time. I’ve now been convinced that growing up results in the death of the spirit but staying young and innocent kills you even faster. What is innocence, anyway? What is adulthood? And what about everything you leave behind—satirically, the book seems to argue that in order to survive, you must abandon hope, innocence, and love, or you will be crushed by the grinding wheel of time. Beautiful things were not meant to last. Is this a warning or a truth? Maybe grownups are very strange, but such is the nature of living.
