I, like many of us, donned my pant suit, put the baby in the car with his “Born ready for Hillary” onesie on & drove off that crisp Tuesday morning in November in a fabulously expectant mood. I couldn’t stand to talk about anything other than the possibility of hearing “Madame President” some time in the next 24 hours. All that said, this book made me even more impressed with Hillary and that, in turn, made me even more sad that she lost. I laughed & cried, but also learned a lot! I highly recommend.

The face of Hillary Clinton showed to me by the mainstream media was the only one I knew before reading this book. I figured there must be more to the story but never took the time to find out. I knew the stories about her emails were crap as well as the accusations about Benghazi. So, I didn't pay much attention to those stories. I voted for Hillary but, did so in large part because I knew I could never support Trump.
She does not have all the answers but does cover a lot of ground about the many reasons why Donald Trump is the current President. These are not just her opinions but are backed up by research.
My eyes were opened to a woman I didn't know existed. I feel that I know her now, not just as a politician but as a wife, mother, grandmother and friend. I already new that she would make the better president but, I now realize what a truly great president she would have made. I look forward to supporting whatever work she does going forward on behalf of our country.

This book was phenomenal - especially so because I listened to it on Audible and it is narrated by Hillary herself. I found it to be an insightful and evenhanded analysis of the 2017 presidential election. She is forthcoming about the fact that it is her perspective but frankly does a very good job walking both through the facts and emotions of the experience. I hesitated to drag my heart back through this heartwrenching experience but it was surprisingly cathartic, I learned a lot, and I would highly recommend it.

People who are going to hate this are going to hate this.

If that's you, please just skip my review. Seriously. Don't read this. It's not for you.

For the rest of us, especially those of us still hurting, for me, anyway, this felt like part of healing. I had to stop to cry at so many points, imagining being in her shoes, but her resilience and determination are inspiring. I feel stronger as a woman for reading it. She takes responsibility where it's hers but also lays out, throughout and particularly everything all in one chapter, the very many forces at play during that election, in America's society in general and probably in future elections unless something is done to make it different. It was also interesting to peek behind the curtain a bit to see what it's like to campaign and also to hear about her relationships with the people around her and how kind and loving and supportive it seems she is.

I bought this with the audio as well, and it was wonderful to hear much of it in her own voice. I'll be giving it another read later when I'll highlight parts I want to remember and savor it it a little more, but I was in such a hurry to hear What Happened that I devoured it.

This book just slayed me.

Excellent Read

Secretary Clinton’s book nails the plight that women have been facing up for decades. Her insight into what happened during the 2016 election tells the truth about what many women face with sexism every day. The double standards women endure, especially women in politics. Secretary Clinton also provides a comprehensive yet simple to understand analysis of Russia and their interference with our election. This was a tough read emotionally but well worth it.

I thoroughly enjoyed this book. While it digs deep into what you'd expect such as American politics, policies, and the 2016 election, it is deeply personal as well.

I am struggling to find the words to adequately review this book because it felt unlike so many other books I have read. I found parts of the book fantastic, but at other times it seemed repetitive and off topic. Overall, listening to this book felt like sitting with a close friend and talking about the election and everything that went on. I didn't find this book as politically divisive as all of the cable news shows, I found this to be a person reflection, almost like reading her journal or diary of the past two years. There was some defensiveness, and although she was careful in her phrasing, there are still clearly some hard feelings about some individuals, but overall I found this book very interesting and it added a new layer of knowledge about the events of the Presidential election from Hilary's unique point of view.

She would have been a damn good president

I would leave a rating, but the lackeys from each side have pretty much ruined the usefulness of ratings for this book. For what it is worth, I would say this is what I would consider a 3+ star book. I am not dissapointed that I read it, but I have no desire to return it.

I will say that this was funnier, more forward looking, and way less (emphasis on "less") blame-shifting than I expected. She has grievances, and she airs them. She made great mistakes, and for the most part, she owns them. "What Happened" is well-worth reading. It goes on a bit longer than I cared to read and was more campaigny than I particularly desired (I feel pretty clear about her positions, as I would assume most readers would...maybe it's in there for posterity?)

While I remain unconvinced that Mrs. Clinton would have made a good president, it was refreshing to encounter a work from a candidate in the 2016 General election where allusions to Dickens and Henri Nouwen sandwiched between quotes from Shaw, Eliot, O' Connor, Atwood, Emerson, etc so effortlessly poured forth. But, there is always 2020, right?!?
