Not a particularly strong start to a series, but I will probably read the next one.
It wasn't that I hated the MC, but she has serious family issues. It made her annoying, and I wasn't really rooting for her at any point. To keep her job, to find love, to stay in town. I just didn't like her enough to care. Plus the mystery was loosely held together and I didn't believe the motive for the cartoonish villain.
But...like I said, I'll probably read book 2 someday, because I just can't stay away from cozy mysteries. 2 stars. Well, 2.5 stars because of Charlie.

Cute little cozy! The lighthouse library setting is so whimsical. We love to see it!

It had all the elements of a story I should love, a lighthouse, a mystery, loving descriptions of Jane Austen 1st editions, and yet, I didn't finish it. One too many fat shaming comments. Also the protagonist talking about her thin "sexy" cousin -- the author probably intended the usual girl on girl "natural jealousy of the less thin" --but I got creepy incest vibes. No thanks.
Probably supposed to be charming; really just annoying.
Round rooms don't have corners, but she keeps looking in them.
Louise Jane clearly doesn't like Lucy, but Lucy keeps biting on the baited hooks Louise dangles for her.
Determined not to go down without a fight, then backs off when the opportunity to do something presents itself? Saved by a cat? Then why not pay attention when the cat exhibits hostility in the first place?
Maybe I'm not a mystery reader.

Digs at hip-hop aside, this was a fun first book. Usually cozy mysteries get better gradually, so I'm going to pick up the next book or two to see how I feel about the series.
I enjoyed this one, so I'm optimistic.

Just okay maybe 2.5 since I’m inclined to read the next in the series. I read the 9th first and enjoyed it so my hope is the writing improves.
A library in a lighthouse is an ideal setting for a murder, especially if rare books are involved. After fleeing Boston and her overbearing mother, Lucy is settling in as the assistant librarian in the Outer Banks lighthouse library. One of the perks of the job is the on site apartment which places Lucy right in the middle of the mystery of the missing Jane Austen books. Meeting all of the characters in Lucy's life sets the stage for this series.
