This book had to work really hard to earn that second star. Terrible, and it sounded so cute. I love cozy mysteries but this was a sloooooooooooog to get through. Main character is so inept, naive, gullible, utterly clueless. I do appreciate that she was aware of how much privilege she'd been raised with, but omg was she a nitwit. The book tried too hard to be cozy--when it stopped trying to be cutesy the voice came across well...that just hardly ever happened. It felt a lot like the author asked a friend who loves cozies what's in them and then made it up from there without ever actually reading a cozy mystery herself. Characters are laughable they're so over the top and ridiculous.
I also don't like emotional/stress eating/drinking for laughs, and there's a lot of that in here.

So, I think I'm discovering that mystery is a genre where I am okay with the protagonist being the wittiest and smartest person in the room. This protagonist is...definitely not either of those things. She is very easily flustered and spooked in instances where I just wanted her to have a smartass comeback. She doesn't even really solve anything and events just kind of happen around her. I don't think I'll continue with this series right away, mainly because the idea of being in this character's head for any longer is exhausting.
I want to read more cozy mysteries because this was a fast and easy read in the best way. I'm not sure if this one the best, worst or typical of the genre. I have to read another cozy mystery for a challenge so we will see!

First in the series. Great read. Hope the series will continue.
The story gets 4 stars but the editing barely deserves 1 star. Some of the worst big-publisher editing I've seen, with a slew of errors. Great story and characters, though and a very well-plotted murder. The author got screwed on this one.

A promising premise but I felt the early character development was poor - caricatured rather than solid character-building. This seemed to settle down after the characters were all introduced and it became a cosy mystery story which, although not entirely unpredictable, was satisfying. It's a world I fancy exploring further and I will be reading the next installment.
I loved the setting of this book. It really paints a picture of the Outer Banks. The cast of characters is delightful and hilarious. I love all the old-family-types. I have to say I really had some problems with the main character. She was really wimpy and easily cowed. She seemed to have some issues with food and eating that made me really concerned. So, trigger warning about that? I want to keep reading the series. I hope the insecure heroine is a first book problem. It would be nice to see her grow emotionally.
