The mystery of this book was solid - I picked it up not knowing that it was #6 in a series, and I would have liked to read the other books, since there were references throughout this one to the earlier books. I'm not sure how much it would have enhanced my reading, but I think that things would have made more sense overall.

However, my biggest hesitation about this book was the classic "old guy who is overall pretty mediocre and generally a womanizer, but who is somehow totally irresistible to all the women around him, especially those half his age..." This is something that seems to often be a trope in books written by older men, and I'm just so over it. Sorry, I just can't suspend my disbelief enough to believe that this pretty meh man is somehow so incredible that women are lining up to throw themselves at him...
