I hate giving non fiction a poor rating but I found the majority of this book to be written in a way that felt awfully dull. The second half definitely picks up quite a bit but overall, it felt more like a textbook kind of experience over an immersive experience. Perhaps that was the authors intention and maybe the author did they best he could with the information given to him. It's a very interesting story - I just wish it was written more vividly.

An excellent book about the USS Tang and her amazing crew. Kershaw has an ability to incorporate necessary information into his narratives without drowning the reader in minutia. The result is a fast-paced yet informative read. I can't recommend this book highly enough.

I listened to this as an audio book and the narration was excellent.  The story was written like an adventure and was captivating.  It was also very interesting to learn about submarines and submariner life during WW2.

Escape from the Deep is a compelling story of a submarine and its crew in WWII.

I listened to this one on my commute and its another winner from Alex Kershaw into the world of WW2. This time he writes about the USS Tang, a highly decorated submarine that terrorized the Japanese before being sunk. Sailors didn't survive when subs sank to the depths of the ocean, that is until the Tang. This is a short, quick-paced history, covering the Tang and its crew, submarine warfare and what happens to the survivors. I might seek out something more detailed about what it was like to fight in submarines as I haven't read that much about that regarding WW2--it seems the ground and air troops get most of the attention.

jumped straight into "excitement" for myself, I would have preferred some background on the crew and people we'd be learning about rather than immediately jumping into the middle of depth charges.
