I did like this and found it interesting, but it wasn’t scary. I also somehow zoned out for some of the most dramatic stuff that happened cause it’d reference something crazy and I’d be like “bro I zoned out for 10 seconds what” but that’s probably my ADHD’s fault
a story with promise; but character motivation, plot, character development, all rather just not THERE. I agree with other reviews- definitely meant as a screenplay, and we can tell. skip it.
This is easily the best book I have read. I will recommend this to bookworms for years to come.

A couple things:
1. I didn’t know this was some type of religious born again book when I picked it up
2. Paradise Lost? A literal poem being used throughout to help save his daughter from this entity that’s never entirely explained or thought through bc where is satan or whatever the thing is even keeping his daughter? How is she even alive?
3. Demonologist as a professional career PLEASE
4. Weird christian metaphors sprinkled throughout as the main guy discovers his faith again??? If I had known (no offence) that this was some type of conversion or christian horror book disguised as actual horror I wouldn’t have picked it up
5. It’s not scary like at all

This was quite an interesting story, with very creepy undertones. In fact, the creepiness just sneaks up on you as you're reading. I like that.
This book will be vastly improved when it's turned into a movie staring Liam Neeson, and he punches demon wolves.
I wanted to like this, because Pyper can turn a phrase. However, I spent the entire book loathing the narrator and wishing terrible things would happen to him, and then being disappointed that the terrible things that did happen to him were so unimaginative.
This is not a Stephen King-scary book. This is a thoughtful Dan Brown book where Robert Langdon--I mean David Ullman--has a North American adventure through personal Milton-inspired mythology with occasionally really unsettling visuals. If you want that, read the hell out of this.

This story is interesting and in the beginning holds tension for the audience well. However, as he gets to the end of the book the story elements get repeated and less interesting. Feels like we've been there and done that with the character. Got old. Got boring.
Wow, I didn't think I was going to finish this one.
Firstly, if you are looking for a horror story, you won't find one in here. If you are looking for something that questions what's right and what's wrong, something that will talk about demons in a thrilling way that won't necessarily scare you, this one's for you.
All in all, I do feel like this book got dragged along the way. There are a lot of pages that shouldn't have made the final cut. It felt repetitive at times and there were some pieces that weren't actually relevant enough to the story.
I did enjoy reading about Paradise Lost, though. I wasn't extremely familiar with Milton's work, but I did find it fascinating and I liked it a lot how Pyper wrote The Demonologist around it.
I didn't really like the characters all that much and I guess that's what made it a lot harder for me to endure.
I think I'm making it feel like I didn't enjoy it whatsoever, but that's not the case. There are definitely some chapters that completely had me, like the ones taking place in Venice. I did enjoy this read in some way, but the thing is that it did not impact me much and I guess I just had high expectations.
