Queer joy is central to the story, which was wonderful at balancing out the dark and tense moments. The character development of Andy made me emotional, and I love the new characters introduced. Fantastic sequel to the Lavender House. Queer history and a mystery all in one.

at first I was like "eugh this will be copaganda won't it" AND THEN IT WAS REVERSE COPAGANDA!!!!!! 🎉🥳🎇🎊 like the protagonist's backstory is overcoming his past as a cop and the bad rep that cops have in the queer community and the guilt he feels about having been one.

Such a great balance of classic gumshoe mystery, well-researched midcentury history, and skillful character development. Detective Andy Mills is finding his way, his community, and his calling — and I'm finding an arc of book 3 because these are some of the most satisfying mysteries I've read in a long time.
