Relating to the characters and the setting in this book was easy for me. Of course, I grew up in a Jewish family in Milwaukee, my father was an academic, I attended UW-Madison and have an in law who was born in Russia. Even if you are not me, you’ll be delighted by the complex relationships, the measured prose and the surprise ending. This book caused me to both laugh out loud and feel deeply moved. The characters are genuine and memorable.

A tricky one to review: First half (or more) really dragged and I almost gave up, which I almost never do. A weak 2 for that part. I persisted and once the action started it was much more enjoyable and shot up to a much stronger 4. Juno Dawson's main strength as an author seems to be a proper cliffhanger ending. As an author I can see this is a good business model, but as a reader it's a bit frustrating. It felt like I had to work awfully hard to get to the good bit, and then there wasn't even any closure. It feels to me like the books could have been shorter, or maybe it didn't need three books in the series (I hope things conclude in the next one).
The cliffhanger at the end of book 1 really did shake things up, but the total change in character of one of the main players is handled pretty well, if a little implausible. I found the feminism and "all men are evil... ...wait, maybe not ALL men are evil... ...nope, all men are definitely evil" trope rather wearing.
I feel kind of tricked into reading the next one and a bit resentful because of that, but I will probably read it, resentfully!

This was a bit of escapist reading for me. Shirley JacksonХs essays about moving to Vermont to raise her family in a rambling old home pulled me in so thoroughly I feel like I know them all. And I want to live there with them. I want that amusing and frustrating domesticity that is so charming in essays. Once I finish a book like this I am acutely aware that any included anecdote is selected on purpose and written in a specific manner. But while IХm reading it . . . itХs exactly where I want to be.

I enjoyed this book. I listened to this because I needed an audiobook and it was available. I liked Mara as a child actor so figured I’d listen to her book. She has such a soothing voice, it was nice to listen to.

Jane reminds me of a blank piece of Paper. I liked reading about her childhood but once she became a governess the little bit of personality she had was sucked out of her soul. Jane is definitely not a girls girl. She was like I wonder why Bertha is crazy. I wonder why Jane I wonder why? Maybe it had to do with her HUSBAND LOCKING HER IN THE ATTIC!!! Also Bertha was completely justified in her actions. Jane literally found out this poor woman was locked up in this attic and didn‰ЫЄt help her, and still thirsted after ROCHESTER.
Sure she had that one moment where she was like this isn‰ЫЄt right but that was more to do that he was married more then anything else. Plus she just forgives him immediately after he got hurt

This was so well written and intriguing. I absolutely loved reading this story. It would make a fantastic movie.

I loved it, all but the last two or three chapters, where it started to broach on the verge of ridiculous.

An exquisite and delicious account of life as a food critic in NYC. I could smell and taste every ingredient as she sumptuously teased my taste buds, and it makes me wish I was a Times writer with a restaurant expense account. The audio book’s narrator was also delightful which greatly added to the experience!

My new favourite novel. It's absolutely astonishing how this story written in the nineteenth century is still entirely relevant. So beautifully written, so many turns of phrase that took my breath away with their simple wisdom. I love it. I can't wait to read it again.
