Does what it says in the tin — or the cover, I suppose.

Paints a pretty believable picture of a small, cosy American town dealing with a series of gruesome murders. While it's pretty well written, I didn't find much in its story that made it stand out.

I don't imagine this story will stick in my memory, but it was a pleasant read nonetheless.

I listened to the audiobook and really liked it. It felt like listening to a podcast about the Boogeyman.

Creative and clever! A fiction novel but told as a true crime and with the author written in as the main character. I just ... yes, so much yes!

The concept here was truly brilliant and in my opinion the execution nailed it!

A very suspenseful and enthralling thriller about a series of murders that happen in a small town in Maryland. The mounting terror and the way you and the main character slowly realize it has to be a local keeps you on the edge of your seat while you read. The ending wasn't what I expected.

Pleasantly surprised to see photos included with most chapters. Such a unique thing to add and makes the true crime vibe really shine through. This book has made me a Chizmar fan, I enjoyed his writing style.

Thank you to Netgalley and Gallery books for allowing me to read an advanced copy.

What happens when true crime is blended with horror fiction?

Audiobook. All the homey small town scene-setting of the first act of a Stephen King novel, but it never gets down to business. No tension, no urgency, just a flat summary of dull events. Read the newest Bret Easton Ellis instead for a gripping memoir/true crime hybrid.

This was so boring. I kept waiting for it to get better but it never did.

This was crazy: in a good way! First word that comes to mind is: wild????? I really thought this was all a true story. The writing, the mc, the setting, even the pictures: straight out of a dateline tv episode which had me hooked. This is a unique and terrifying novel. Almost a hint of horror: horror being the scary parts of life. Mind blowing + heartbreaking all at once. I loved it! Although, at times I felt like i didn’t know what was real and what was fake.

Wow. I’m really happy I picked this back up and finished it. It’s atmospheric, immersive, and thrilling. I felt every chill as I read along. Is it horror? A crime mystery? I really can’t place it. Huge recommendation to true crime fans.
