A few really interesting stories. And a few absolute duds. I like how the author wove the short stories together using themes and characters across multiple stories, however it was extremely difficult to follow certain aspects of the tales.
Short stories are not my usual forte, but these were interesting. Some of the stories are slightly related, and all of them are unusual.
Oyeymi's writing has this dreamlike quality to it- it always feels like you're sinking under somehow when you read her work. These stories definitely maintained that quality-slightly magical and off-kilter stories revolving around keys from different perspectives. Her work never fails to be interesting and lovely, to be sure, though I tend to struggle more with short stories than novels for some reason.
I just was not interested in any of the stories and I kept putting this book off. I thought the writing was good, just not enough to keep my interest.
Like many short story collections the book was uneven. I was leaning toward 3 stars, but the last story hit me so hard I decided to round up.
A lovely haunting book, each story brilliantly written and vivid. One of my favorite books read in recent memory.
I hate to give this such a low rating because the prose is quite beautiful. But after the first story I just couldn’t follow it. The stories were confusing and I had to re-read so much to try to understand what I missed. Just not for me I guess.
I love collections of short stories but sometimes find that I'm struggling to get the theme that is supposedly woven throughout. What I liked about this collection is that there is a clear and present theme throughout each story, and that the stories lightly connect. I thought it was very well written and had some cool fantasty-type aspects to it!
