I loved the first few stories, but got tired of the style and absurdity by the end.

Inconsistent collection, the first story was solid but most of the collection was, as one friend put it, "maliciously confusing" without a strong enough payoff to warrant the effort.

Maybe I’m too dumb for this or maybe magical realism isn’t my cup of tea. Loved the first story and wanted more. Stopped enjoying by the marionettes.

This book is for a very niche type of reader. It's not bad, at least I am pretty sure it isn't, but i felt very shut out from this book. Since it's a collection of short stories, some will inevitably be stronger or weaker than the rest.

Either you felt rushed away from the ending, overwhelmed from too much meandering, or just left confused.

I don't regret reading this book, but it was a challenge.

Not quite as captivating as some of her novels, but still worth a read.

I wanted to rate this book higher than three stars, because I fully appreciate and admire Helen Oyeyemi's skill as a contemporary writer--I marvel at the complexity of these genre-bending-gender-bending tales. But. My brain literally hurt as I tried to make sense of each new setting and situation in this collection of short stories.
