This was a delightful escape from some of the heavier books I had been reading.
I don't want to give too much away to those who aren't familiar with this story, but it has a cute and unique way of telling a story about fairytales, books, and why you are wonderful for who you are.
The movie was special to me when I was younger, so it was special to be able to read through this book and relive it.
The lessons within were charming (and very dramatic in some cases), and I can see why this is a classic. The creatures and lands within are unique and spark your imagination.
I was lucky enough to be reading a Folio Society version, which is absolutely the most stunning book I've ever laid my hands on. I was so in love with how the book matched its in-book description so perfectly, and the multi-colored fonts were such a beautiful touch.
This book is charming, delightful, and sometimes presents lessons to the reader that are shockingly heavy. While parts of this book did not resonate with me, I have no doubt that a 13-year-old me would have been in love with this story and this world.
Quotes:
“If you have never spent whole afternoons with burning ears and rumpled hair, forgetting the world around you over a book, forgetting cold and hunger--
If you have never read secretly under the bedclothes with a flashlight, because your father or mother or some other well-meaning person has switched off the lamp on the plausible ground that it was time to sleep because you had to get up so early--
If you have never wept bitter tears because a wonderful story has come to an end and you must take your leave of the characters with whom you have shared so many adventures, whom you have loved and admired, for whom you have hoped and feared, and without whose company life seems empty and meaningless--
If such things have not been part of your own experience, you probably won't understand what Bastian did next.”
