2022 October Reading Challenge
Prompt: read a book with a cat, witch, or magical item on the cover

Yeah...this was disappointing.

I grew up with the Goosebumps tv show, so I was curious to read some of the books for this month's challenge. But aside from the ending and how the wishes worked, I didn't really like this book. Yes, I know I am not the target audience for this, but the writing feels very stilted and while Sam was treated poorly, she wasn't a terribly endearing or sympathetic character. Again, the ending was good and was different than the tv adaptation of this story, but it was just meh.

Still, I'm sure others will enjoy this. I'll be reading another Goosebump book for this month, so hopefully that will be better.

I really disliked this book. I felt nothing but annoyance for ALL of the characters. I didn't even want to root for the main character getting back at her bully. And the wish giving witch wasn't even a good spooky character to get invested in. I was also bored on top of being annoyed. There was just too many detailed basketball game scenes for me to get into what was going on. I don't watch enough sports to understand what those basketball terms meant, and there was hardly any context clues. And there was one instance of a whole page dedicated to the main character brushing her hair in front of a mirror, when she should be panicking??

I had hoped for the ending to at least make up for the suffering, but it was only mildly satisfying. I would have preferred a different ending to wrap up this mess of a story. I, at the very least, enjoyed an outcome of one of the wishes; it felt very Twilight Zone to me and I can appreciate that. I won't tell you what it is, for spoilers, if you do decide to read this. It only lasted like a short chapter, so the scene wasn't worth it enough to give this two stars.

I would have DNFed this part way in, if this wasn't for a buddy read and I was dedicated to reading every single Goosebumps with them.

One of the few (if not the only) Goosebumps book that doesn't really have a monster or some otherworldly "thing" going on. Yes, you get wishes, but the villains are peer pressure and human cruelty.
