This book caught my eye from the very beginning and didn’t lose it once. An interesting gripping book with lovable characters

I would rather give it a 3.5, it’s a good book, but honestly the title is kind of out of line, as none of them was lying.
Bronwyn and Nate have way more narative interventions than Cooper and Addy and it seems like the main focus of the plot starts shifting towads their friendship/love story, rather than Simon’s death.
There are also some cliches that are bugging me a little and I think Jake’s backstory should have been presented in more detail to give people a better idea about his personality and behavioural issues.
Anyway, the book is an easy read, it’s not too long and doesn’t require that much brain power to get through, so it’s perfect for reading on vacation or while traveling.

I finished this book in a few short hours it was that addicting! That being said, it was veryyyy easy to figure out. I do not usually read mysteries, but from the get go I knew who was the real killer, and what connors real secret was, that Bronwyn and Nate were going to fall in love.

I loved the plot twist of Jake being the accomplice, I didn’t see that coming and if you go deeper into that, Addy didn’t deserve that. Jake was the true villain of the story, a boyfriend that is controlling, condescending, who used you for sex, a true narcissist, and definitely showed some sociopath behaviors. Addy was lucky she got out of that relationship or else we would have been reading another book with devastating themes.

Okay here’s the thing, I hate multiple povs. I really stops me from relating to the characters. But this one was actually well written. Although they all sounded a bit similar in voice I was still managed to fall in love with Bronwyn and Nate. I am a sucker for bad boy falls in love with nice girls tropes.

Coopers outage was anxiety inducing and the fact that Nate stood up for him was iconic. Addy was very bland in the beginning but her arc was so good near the end. Bronwyn was literally so nice to everyone she met, it was shocking.

Simons death was depressing because in the end he was just a young boy looking to get more out of life than he did.

Overall I liked this book it was a fun, quick read. 4/5 for being slightly predictable. Also I probably won’t be picking up the second book in the series. I think this had a nice ending and it should just stay that way.

Meh. This was an easy read and a good book to occupy some time, but it’s definitely not one I’m going to write home about. There were some twists. I was surprised probably twice. But still it was just meh. I usually like YA, but I think this just maybe a felt a bit too YA. Maybe I just don’t like YA mystery! It felt like the ending just sort of...happened. And then the book just sort of...ended. I feel like too many hints were given away that made the ending not hit how it was supposed to. I was more interested in the love stories than the murder mystery. Also the author seemed a bit racially out of touch a few times. I don’t think I’ll be giving the sequel a read, but if I happen to come across it then I might. 3.5/5

Although I love YA, this book is not one I would typically pick up. I read it for a book club with friends, and while I welcomed the opportunity to read something I normally wouldn't, I don't think I was the best audience for this book based on my preferences. Or maybe I'm just too old to enjoy the high school drama?

I did enjoy the character arcs, especially because the narrator I disliked the most at the beginning was my favorite by the end, even if I found her transformation a little over the top.

I was confused as to what year the story was supposed to be set in? I assumed it was 2016ish since it was published in 2017, which would make the characters Gen Z; however, so many aspects screamed late 2000's/early 2010's Millenials to me - Rihanna's "Only Girl", Fall Out Boy, iPod nanos, Tumblr, Facebook groups, to name a few. Did I miss something? Not that Gen Z doesn't know about/use these things, but that entire list takes me back to my high school days.

Also, the houses in San Diego wouldn't have basements due to earthquakes? A minor detail, I know, but it bothered me as a SoCal resident.

Still, I would be lying if I said I wasn't intrigued by the sequel and won't consider picking it up one day.
