Moments and recollections of the life of woman who was once an orphan in Bulgaria.
I expected this to be a short read but it was far from that. Partially because it’s exam season/end of the semester and partially because the subject matter was so heavy.
This story feels cohesive to me but the “chapters” or stories don’t follow a particular timeline. Some of the stories are of outside people but relate to the main narrative. The language is simple but holds a lot of weight.
This book is sad, not crying sad but this sometimes overwhelming melancholy feeling, like there’s a void in you heart or soul. Adoption and they adoption system is complicated, controversial and the ones who suffer most are the children placed in it.
At times I was hoping for more, and the end confused me a little bit. But I think this is a book you need to read a few times over to fully experience everything within it.
Graphic: Child abuse, Sexual assault, Lesbophobia, and Homophobia
Moderate: Racism
