Another one of these small novels written with piercing clarity that pack a big punch. Reminded me of Hurricane Season in places with its unflinching brutality.

Very well written and translated. Also very heavy topics. I struggled to get through this one despite the high quality writing.

I appreciate the concept behind this novel: that staring into another person's eyes (perspective) for four minutes will create empathy for them. There is a narrative thread for an unnamed protagonist who lives in a home with many other abandoned or orphaned children and how this created both an enduring bond with her and her friend turned lover from the home, and then how it leads her to provide the sense of connection and love from an adult for other children like her when she is an adult. This narrative thread is interesting and touching.

The rest of the shorter chapters are various people's lives at a glimpse that can be read in four minutes to give us an idea of their lives. Personally, I found this a bit jarring because we abruptly go from being deep within the unnamed protagonist's story to a different person in the city.

Almost every page is horrible things happening to people, mostly kids, and I can’t deal.
