Booked for Murder

dark mysterious tense slow-paced

Main character was incredibly unlikable. Pacing was very slow.

this was v cute but GOD I couldn't STAND Maddy
so sorry if you enjoyed her character but she shouldn't have been as old as she was with the way she was acting. n ik that you have to suspend your reality for a bit when reading a book like this but messing w/ a police investigation, not reporting threatening phone calls, going to possible murder suspects on your own -- WHAT THE HELL IS WRONG WITH THIS WOMAN
also didn't enjoy the fact that Phil was thrown under the bus (i was also v mad at her) but Maddy kicking her out like that was mean n we all knew it
I finished this book out of spite but I do have to give it credit cause I really thought that someone else had done it the entire time n was in it to find out whodunnit

An aggressively unlikeable main character who looks down on everyone around her flails helplessly through a nonsense plot involving a lesbian arsonist grandma and incredibly friendly meth dealers. Insipid.

I was very excited by an amateur sleuth mystery. But this book, while entertaining in parts, didn't endear me to its characters at all. Why'd they act the way they did, what drove them to new things, what got them riled up and what helped them be sane...I could not tell you one character from the other if it weren't for tangible differentiators like their names or jobs. I loved the plot - the twists came in at all the right times and the unfolding of the story was intriguing enough to be a successful mystery book. But I considered DNFing a lot of times.

Mixed feelings about this one.

unless you are harper lee, you shouldn't name a character "bo"(o). poorly written and boring.

Thank you NetGalley for an e-arc of this book in exchange for an honest review. This book was just fine. It was pretty much what you would expect from a small town mystery on the cozier side. My only issues were that I didn’t love the main character, I’m happy she had some growth but she wasn’t my favorite for a good portion of the book. I also dislike when characters are differentiated based on their use of grammar, just because someone is from a small town doesn’t mean they need to use poor grammar to show it.
