Sorry was too slow and spent too much time on science-related explanations to keep me interested.

Supposedly intelligent characters die to their own incompetence when the could just leave at any time.

The author didn't seem to have any plan beyond mermaids attack, which is dragged out over a hundred pages it didn't need before the book suddenly ends with no resolution of any of the actual plots.

Complete page turner. Could not put this book down. Deeply unsettling in the best way.

I only had to look up a few of the marine terms, and I consider that a win. It felt like an immersive novel and that there were enough context clues to learn most everything. There’s no real way to talk about the setting without giving major ideas away, but just know that mermaids are vicious and sapphics are smart.

Compelling, descriptive, evocative. The best three words to sum up this book. It took me a while to read since I've been busy with a new job, but dear heavens, it was worth the time. The characters are not all lovable and easy to cheer on. The plot was stunning and left little to no holes for us to fill. I wish the epilogue gave more insight into the aftermath, with the scientists announcing what they found, but I'll happily imagine it all goes beautifully. I think I just found a new auto-read author for myself based on writing style alone. I was disgusted and captivated the entire time I had it in my hands, will be screaming from the rooftops to my Danger & Donuts book club (horror/thriller book club) about this book. I'll be making a journal note with all my favorite quotes because holy f*** there are so many.

Forewarning - if you do not enjoy sciency talk you will not enjoy this book.

This story was a fascinating rendition on humanity's want to uncover the unknown and regretting what they find. In this case, mermaids. But not the beautiful mermaids like in H2O, no sirree, these murder mistresses would rather rip out your throat.

I had high hopes for this book going into spooky season since A) I am deeply afraid of the ocean and B) love mermaids, but I will say I was disappointed. While I found the narration highly intriguing and the characters relatable the story did not fill me with the dread that I expect from the horror genre. Overall I am glad that I read it and I love that the main couple is sapphic. However, I would not read it again if I was asked.

this book is so SLOW for a monster horror. Cool concepts and cool characters but holy shit things should happen in a book
