Couldn't put it down. So many twists and turns. But I didn't like the ending.

I enjoyed this a lot more than the stars given up until the end. It all just wrapped up a little too neat and twee for my liking.

Continuing my TBR project:
This is one the oldest selection on my TBR list - Originally added October 31, 2015.

I have read all of Kate Morton‘s books except for two. When I went back and looked at how I had read them I found that I had given all of them 3-stars, meaning that I liked them all. But, The Lake House was just a little bit more special to me. I don’t know if it’s because I related so well to the characters or because it’s just the kind of mystery story I like. A 70-year-old cold case about a missing child finally gets solved and what twisted loop of evidence that had to be untangled before the solution could be revealed. It had me on my toes the entire time.

A captivating read that will leave you astonished in the end.

This is my first Kate Morton novel and I am delighted to say I've found another favorite to add to my shelves.

The writing is beautiful and captures more than the readers imagination but emotions as well.

The plotting of this book was downright impressive. The timing of the clues and hints had to be so properly placed, it drove me mad trying to figure it out. In the end, I wasn't even close! That doesn't happen often.

I loved the different aspects we got and absolutely LOVED the time frames. I usually abhor time jumping, but Morton so craftily laces the two together.

I devoured page after page feeling intrigued, peaceful yet nervous and captivated with each new twist I learned. A must read!

I've read two other books by Kate Morton and upon starting this one, I felt like I was heading down a familiar path.. Wealthy English family with dark secrets in an old house .... but well before I was halfway through, I was completely drawn into the story. There are a few mysteries that keep you guessing till the end. I didn't even mind the slightly corny ending, the storytelling more than made up for it..I haven't read an author recently who has done a great job at ending a book, but that's another story. This really is a good read.

The long-winded descriptions took some time to get used to, but once I did, I enjoyed this complex, multi-layered mystery. I love that Morton could weave a modern detective story with an historical whodunit into one intriguing story and connected characters. I also appreciated that it's a standalone mystery- those are hard to find in a genre full of never-ending series. After eagerly racing through the last few chapters I was, however, sorely disappointed with the ending that felt entirely too contrived.
