the two biggest green flags in a romance book everrrrrrr
i never thought it would be possible to find two mature and sensible adults in a romance book BUT HERE WE AREEEEE. ok tbh i kinda wanted to dnf it at the start just cuz it felt v cliche and cringey (can't rmb which scene exactly) but im glad i powered thru. i (surprisingly) did enjoy this a lot (given how much i hated the first book lol) and i rly love the two mcs a lot. this is by far truly the healthiest relationship i have ever witnessed. they both communicated their feelings/thoughts perfectly and showed a great understanding of each other's temperaments / personalities.
There were many potential moments for a great misunderstanding / miscomm but they behaved like mature adults and took time away to think through their thoughts (rather than run their mouths off and then try to do damage control; i'm looking at all u terrible romance books with third act breakup scenes - notably only when it's us and that one guy who peed in his backyard and i can't rmb the title of the book. That scene when Ryan semi-accused Indy of trying to manipulate him like his ex did with the pregnancy scheme and she left him to reconsider her future and what she wanted in a relationship. Usually in a scene like this, I would get rly frustrated with the mmc for running his mouth unnecessarily, but in this case I thoroughly empathised with both of them. He was cracking under the insurmountable pressure from his high-flying career, dire lack of sleep and a press conference with shitty reporters. The pregnancy test kit was the straw that broke the camel's back. While I can see where he's coming from and how he felt in that moment, that of course, does not excuse what he said to Indy. And her response to leave and take some time away was also v mature and sensible of her, to give them both time to realign their goals for their futures. I love it.
All throughout the story, they made the best decisions, said the most romantic shit and made the sweetest gestures to each other. This right here is truly the epitome of a perfect couple and also the perfect book boyfriend. While he had issues of his own and they were v all-consuming at one point, he was self-aware enough to know and try to overcome them (rather than to choose to continue to drown in them). Indy was also the perfect book girlfriend / best friend / daughter / all-round person. Sorry but my heart is with Ryan for this one lol.
He rly drove the standards to the moon and beyond. First off, he is rich as hell (of course). He single-handledly solved all of Indy's financial problems without batting an eye (even though she fretted over them for months). He gave her his credit card and free rein to buy anything. ok but these aren't anything new. The new part is the way he loved her quietly and in his own way. From trying to keep her flowers alive and constantly buying new ones to keep her happy, to learning sign language from her mother to communicate with her dad. Even gestures like immediately converting all his groceries to vegetarian-friendly for her sake and not letting her pay rent so she didn't have to drive rideshares at night. From him being cold / hostile at her invading his private space, to quietly waiting on the couch for her to come home I CAN'T DEAL.
I just adore their rs so much and I think its a great example of how to communicate and treat ur partner with respect and adoration (none of that neck-choking / slut-shaming / humiliating crap going on; looking right at that twisted love series and king of wtv series) Like I think I just prefer it when the mmc keeps that barbaric behavior to the bedroom, and I draw the line when it bleeds into everyday life. And like the fmc had a praise kink instead?? And damn was it hotter than all that degrading nonsense?? And also their sex was more realistic too (maybe except for the part where her fingers don't touch when wrapped ard his dick which I refuse to believe is possible cuz she's tall and not petite so her hands should be pretty big too and nah this ain't it) cuz he was celibate for > 2 years and of course, didn't last v long. I always found it ridiculous when the mmc hasn't touched a woman in 8 years and somehow fucks like a god and lasts for hours. Nah.
Oh and I also found it rly refreshing that there wasn't any 'ok lets be gf and bf' or 'I can't do this anymore, let's break up'. There was no clear labeling of the rs at any point in time and it flowed so smoothly from the start, it followed their natural progression from friends to lovers so seamlessly and I love it.
Honestly, there is no WOW factor in this, in the way that I've been rating my 5 stars book but I'm giving this one 5 stars simply because of how beautiful their rs is and how much I adore it. It's truly very rare to find a romance book with 2 green flags ok.
