3.5 overall due to some parts being too verbose. Rounded up to 3.75 because I appreciate the themes and message of the book.
The main character's voice/perspective was interesting but some parts did not click or make sense, e.g. telomerase = lobsters living forever or when Grace was first learning how to use her powers and "mindmelded" / became someone else...
Lots of parts could've been cut out to make the pacing tighter. This book's pacing and general vibes feel similar to How to Stop Time, Midnight Library, The Humans, etc. so maybe it's just how Matt Haig writes.

Honestly, this was a weird one and while it wrapped up nicely, I think I was expecting something more based on how the middle of the book read. I'll always read something by Matt Haig but probably won't keep this one on the shelf.
Have you ever wondered what it's like to be inside the mind of a 72-year-old retired woman?
This reads like we are in Grace Winters' mind, even though she's telling this story to a former student, he quickly fades into the background, becoming more of a footnote.
The experiences of Grace Winters life confronts us with the deep, often painful trauma that makes her human and relatable. Yet, with that, there’s a lot of simile and random musings that can be a bit distracting. We find ourselves constantly circling back to the grief that defines Grace along with being introduced to a supernatural element that hits you out of nowhere, like a deer suddenly stepping into the road.
Ultimately, the story invites us to reflect on how we can get lost in the sorrow of our grief, feeling invisible as we move through life. But it reminds us, like Grace, that even in our sadness, we leave an impact on others and the world around us—and can find purpose in protecting it.

It had some great life lessons/mottos. Sometimes very wordy & drags on...like we didn't need to hear 50 strangers thoughts etc. Everytime she went into town.
This author can tell a very good story and is good at visuals just sometimes gets in the weeds.
