Not Sanderson's finest work, but I can see why it got him an agent/publishing deal.
Really classic hero's journey stuff - tasks to fulfill, allies to befriend etc. - all layered atop a nifty little magic system. Worth a read as long as you accept the fairly obvious plot, fantasy tropes, and inevitable apostropocalyptic character and place names.

For an unpublished Sanderson novel, this has been a really enjoyable read. I can definitely see why Brandon didn't feel it's publishable in its current state - his characters are far from being good, and dialogue can be downright abysmal at times - but the plot and the worldbuilding are good. A few plot twists were foreshadowed a bit too heavily, so the reveals were ruined, but all in all it was a good novel. Makes me even more excited for the graphic novel adaptation.

I'm impressed. For a first, unpublished book this was great. I mean, the pacing was a bit off, and it started a bit choppy, but once it got going it was great. Now on to the graphic novel! :-)
