The story continues - with more peril, prophecies, and soul searching!

I cannot say enough about how well TJ Klune writes his characters. Sam (and his crew) all seem very shallow and silly on the surface but the beauty of them all is that each character has the capacity - and the opportunity to show it - for great empathy and kindness even in the face of truly terrible circumstances.

I loved seeing Sam grow more into himself and watching HaveHeart become more solid. I both can't wait and am not ready for the next book.

This was a bit more serious than the first book but thanks to Gary, full of rainbows and glitter. Sam is growing in self believe in what he can do but one hopes he doesn't over believe. Still loving the journey.

I was kind of bored by this one. The characters are all great but I wanted more to happen. It felt like a lot of the same.

It took me a long time to read this, which was largely unrelated to the book, but the book itself really didn't help. It's a bit of a drag. I'm not sure how, given this is apparently shorter than book 1, but it's a drag. It also doesn't help with how frequent the use of a slur against the Roma is used, or the weird reverse racism stuff. This book released in 2017. There really isn't an excuse for this. It serves no purpose other than being in very bad taste, at best. I mean maybe there could have been argument how even the marginalized can be bigots, but it's handled very badly here by being transformed into... what it is.

The dynamics aren't that different from book 1, other than there's no mutual pining (not really), just actual partners in relationships. The problem is likely that Kevin is in most of the story this time around, and he is very, very annoying. I'm okay with sex humor - even kinky sex humor - but this one really pushed my limits. It's repetitive, distracting, and... just kind of dumb, honestly. While book 1 was funny to the point that I laughed myself silly, this one is almost nonstop bad sex jokes, and it's... relentless in a bad way.

The plot itself is slow and uninteresting. There isn't really character development so much as 70% of the book is sex jokes, and the characters occasionally change setting. A sort of lust triangle (it's not a love triangle) didn't help, and it's honestly one of the worst triangles I've seen. I dislike like them normally anyway, and that the narrative kind of opens it to not being a problem doesn't help with how pointless it feels.

I don't know if I'll continue. I'd like to read book 5 when it comes out, so I probably will, but given how disappointing this was, and how I know bad things happen in book 3... I can't say I'm that excited.

If you want books about magic boyfriends and kinky relationships, try Pia Foxhall's "Fae Tales" stories. If you want stories about mages dealing with all kinds of relationships and world-ending problems, try Tamora Pierce's "Circle of Magic". I don't know if it's possible to skip this one and still enjoy the series but... if it is possible, I would.

Sam: espectacular como siempre, lidiando con la situaciones como todo un profesional y con eso quiero decir que siempre está cagandola. Pero por eso lo amamos.
Gary: fabuloso como siempre, ninguna crítica.
Tiggy: perfecto, nunca cambies
Ryan: sigue siendo un imbécil y un cavernícola a veces, pero lo amamos por eso.

Nuevos personajes: Vadoma… muerete.

DRAGONES NUEVOS!!!!!!!!!!! AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH

Lo único que podría criticar (y es algo tan mínimo que ni siquiera debería mencionarlo) es que a veces la historia es un poco lenta. PERO ES NADA, NADA EN COMPARACIÓN CON LO BUENO ES QUE EL LIBRO

I LOVE THIS SERIES, I CAN NOT EXPLAIN MY LOVE AND THAT'S WHY I'M SCREAMING. WHY ARE YOU READING THIS REVIEW? GO AWAY AND READ THESE WONDERFUL BOOKS AND BE HAPPY!!!!!! DON’T YOU WANT TO BE HAPPY?????!!!?!!

Sam: spectacular as always, dealing with situations like a professional and with that…. I mean that he is always getting in trouble and making everything worse. But that's why we love him.
Gary: fabulous as always, no criticism.
Tiggy: perfect, never change.
Ryan: he's still an asshole and a caveman sometimes, but we love him for that.

New characters: Vadoma ... die, I hate you.

NEW DRAGONS !!!!!!!!!!! AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH

The only thing that I could criticize (and it's something so minimal that I should not even mention it) is that sometimes the story is a bit slow. BUT IT’S NOTHING, NOTHING COMPARED WITH THE PERFECTION THAT IS THE BOOK!!!!!!!

Back with Sam, Ryan, Gary, Tiggy and Kevin and all is well.

Well until Sam's estranged family turn up and Sam and co find themselves on a quest!

It was hilarious, totally inappropriate and encompasses found family!

Just a short one from me but if you loved book 1, you'll love this!

3.75 star — a strong continuation to the series!!

A Destiny of Dragons continues the self-aware, entertaining tone of The Lightning-Struck Heart but also put in the serious work expanding upon the characters and the world. It's not as light-hearted as The Lightning-Struck Heart but it does the hard, necessary groundwork for the sequels. In this, Sam, a once beloved, optimistic wizard (apprentice) is confronted by his destiny. but perhaps most devastatingly, he has to face the prospect that his mentor(s) have lied to him for the entire time he's known them.

We really get a more in-depth look into Sam and I find myself like rooting rooting for him. You also get a glimpse of this Sam in the previous book but here you really get to see the young wizard struggling to juggle between his powers, destiny and being a young person bound to make mistakes hidden beneath all the jokes and sarcasm.

Also I'm very much a #HaveHeart gal. Their dynamic is very much 'dumb and dumber' and they are so fun and wholesome. They are dumb boys in love trying to stop each other from making dumb decisions. They are disgustingly in love and I love it for them so much. (Should I repeat once again how in love they are because they are in love!!).

With established relationships, sometimes books don't do a good job bringing in conflict without making the conflicts unnecessary and stupid. But A Destiny of Dragons did a real good job here, there's tension in the relationship with the dramatic changes Sam's destiny bring but Sam and Ryan remain communicative and fierce in their love for each other. Of course wizards have their secrets but the book does a good job giving convincing reasons why Sam is keeping those secrets.

In fewer words, I love their love!!

Cornerstone is a very similar concept to Tether in the Green Creek series and ohhhh it's very keyboard smashes. The heart in T.J. Klune's writing is unreal and it gets me every single time.

The friendship group/found family is also, as always, a delight to read about. I think the banter between them is quite similar to The Lightning-Struck Heart but with the more 'serious' plot, the banter feels refreshing and not repetitive. There're hints to there being more to Gary and Tiggy's past we are going to explore in the future and I'm excited.

Honestly, I love this installment more than The Lightning-Struck Heart and hopefully, my increasing love for books in Tales From Verania continues!!
