I normally don’t read thriller but this one was so good! I’ll finish the trilogy for sure.
Police procedural novels aren't normally my cup of tea, but I read this one a) because it's set in the Baztan Valley in Navarra, a place I know and love thanks to holidays there, and b) it was good Spanish reading practice. I wouldn't say it was great literature, and the effort of reading in Spanish slowed me down, but I did mostly enjoy it. Its particularity is that Redondo combines the detective thriller with the myths and culture of the Basque country -- sometimes a bit too much, but it does add atmosphere to the story. The heroine, Inspector Amaia Salazar, has a complicated backstory too, which adds interest to a plot that might be pedestrian without it. Some of the characters are a bit unrealistic, particularly Amaia's irritatingly perfect American husband -- whose role I think is largely to provide an excuse for other characters to reel off lectures about Basque folklore. As the action takes place in February, it's hardly a tourist puff for the Baztan, because it rains all the time :) Don't let that put you off though!
The ending was a bit of a letdown. I think detective novels should give the reader a chance to work out whodunnit by providing enough subtle clues for the attentive reader, but this one didn't until the last few pages, and it just didn't seem plausible given what we had been told of the character beforehand. There was a logic failure too:
Still, I will be reading the sequel!

Spoiler
the person who confronted the murderer in the end expressed shock and disbelief, although they had done everything possible to obstruct the police investigation in order to protect the culprit, so must have known or at least strongly suspected who the killer was.Still, I will be reading the sequel!
Maravillosa novela. He disrutado muchisimo leyendo el libro.

Another slice of literary European crime, set in the Basque region of Spain. Although I did find a certain familiarity with the style of the writing, the historical and social detail of an area largely unknown to me, more than compensated for the more linear aspect of the plotting. I found the exploration of local superstitions woven into the plot incredibly interesting, and likewise the references to the Spanish Inquisition added another layer to the sometimes pedestrian characterisation of the police protagonists. Salazar was a strong enough lead for the investigative strand of the plot, and I enjoyed the trials and tribulations of her fiery family that punctuated the book, and the visitation of the past that occurs for her, but overall she was too similar to many female detectives that have proceeded her in the genre to really make much of an impact. Well written and engaging enough overall and would still recommend for the insight into the Basque history and region.
