I was craving a good urban fantasy and believe me i read some pretty good books this year but nothing like this one.I was missing something and i guessed i finally found what i was looking for!
This was my first Gena Showalter book and i regret not reading sooner, her fun twists and chemistry with the words made me devour this book!
Pros:
-Belle Powers
-Rome and Belle dialogues(priceless!)
-Tanner
-No love triangles
-Shape shifting
-The chemistry between Rome and Belle(it remind me of cat and bones fiery relationship)
-Belle's Sarcasm
-The writing was easy and engaging
-Really a page turner
Cons:
-Everything was too good so why have a sequel?Yeah i'm hungry for more Rome but i'm afraid Belle and Rome relationship will fall apart.

Favorite Quotes:

“DID YOU REALLY THINK you could escape me?” a husky, familiar voice breathed into my ear.
“You may be the Periodic Table Chick, but I’m a damn good tracker.”

"INTERESTS:
Long walks on the beach (with Rome), sunsets (watching them with Rome), romance novels (acting out
the love scenes with Rome), cold winter nights (snuggling with Rome), Rome in kilts/uniforms/calendars
(or nothing at all), and massages (given by Rome)."

Funny, fast, action filled, sexy and interesting...
The main female character(Belle) is a young some what dingbat type with a huge responsibility of caring for her father. Her snarky remarks had me laughing out loud. I found myself really liking her with all her faults. She is working at a coffee shop when something happens that gives her powers that could cause major problems for those around her and the world. Every government agency wants her, some for nefarious reasons.
The male Alpha character(Rome) is a strong, solider type. He has a job to do, people to protect and a family. He also has a secret something extra about him. He wants to use the girl to help him. Sexy, strong, loyal, what cold be wrong with that ?
The other side characters are equally interesting and very different from the average in this gene. I would like to see more of Tanner, the smart mouth young man.
It was a bit rough in spots, not the best writing but the story and characters made it really good. I can't wait to get to the next one.

Oh.My.God...funny! I loved this book! You are simultaniously worried for Belle and worried what mess she'll concoct next. Her relationship with Rome is great! The are such a fun and dynamic team (with Tanner thrown in) it made the whole book really fun to read!

Look. The premise is so good, and the book started with humour and good energy. And then I realised the entire book (except for the last few pages) happens over like 5 days?? Like you fell in love with someone over 5 days?? It’s not even a true mate trope, it’s just horniness (which, don’t get me wrong, is fine, but over 5 days and possessive/jealous/the l word IS WHACK). It was also incredibly cringy and everything was icky.

Gena Showalter, babes, you are definitely sometimes a hit or a miss

Ok. Really funny, slightly suspenseful, romance. Belle is a smartass, and the story is told through her perspective. Her commentary on things is hilarious. If you want a fun love story that'll have you laughing, this is it.

This is the first book by Gena Showalter that I've read. In "Playing with Fire" we meet Belle Jamison a restless woman who can't hold down a job and is sure there's something more for her out there, she just doesn't know what. One day while working at her meaningless job at a coffee shop a strange man runs in claiming that people are out to kill him. Then the man disappears. Later that evening Belle returns home and falls very ill. When she wakes up she's developed what could only be described as "super powers" also, there's a really attractive man in her apartment who wants to "neitralize her". From here all craziness ensues.

I liked the book well enough. I think that it got a little bogged down with repetition though. There was a big chunk of the book devoted to whether or not Belle could trust Rome. Then there was another portion devoted to the eventual sacrifices Belle would have to make once this particular mission was over. It just took up too much time and honestly dragged on so much there were times that I just wanted to skip to the next part.

Overall, however, Gena Showalter did a great job with the subject matter. With many books out now being about vampires and shapeshifters, Showalter did great with the "superhero" genre. She created a unique world where people with super powers are fighting against corrupt people. But who says who's the real good guys? The plot mainly focused on Belle becoming used to her newly acquired powers and how to possibly find a cure for them all while wondering who to trust along the way.

Gena Showalter really handled the attraction between Belle and Rome very well. The scenes between them were so full of tension it was great! There were times I wish, however, that their feelings for each other didn't seem so quick to materialize, but I remember this is considered a romance novel and usually relationships happen quickly in them. I also believe that this was only supposed to be a stand-alone story, but Gena Showalter did write a sequel [b:Twice as Hot|6747545|Twice as Hot (Tales of an Extraordinary Girl #2)|Gena Showalter|http://photo.goodreads.com/books/1312310891s/6747545.jpg|6534316]. So maybe things would have been paced differently had there been a sequel in sight at the time this was written. I do look forward to finishing this duology. I don't believe there are any other adventures scheduled for Belle and Rome, but I guess you never know. Until Then!
