An absolutely excellent short story collection that explores different aspects of humanity through engaging characters and lightly speculative elements.
A few of my favorite stories include:
- Breastmilk: A new mother struggles to produce breastmilk while coming to terms with her husband's infidelity
- Contributions: A short but excellent story about a group of women who support one another and how they deal with a new woman who joins and takes advantage of their generosity
- Things Boys Do: Three new fathers deal with the guilt and feelings brought on by looking at their newborn sons
- Masquerade Season: A boy discovers three masquerades on a walk home and accepts them into his life but his mother begins demanding more and more from them.
Pemi Aguda create compelling and complex characters that propel her stories forward. Deeply human, they are fascinating to follow even if they aren't always the easiest to root for. At the core of each story is a human emotion or experience that Aguda explores through the use of lightly speculative elements. An excellent collection that I highly recommend to anyone who loves a good character driven story.

Hauntingly beautiful and powerful! This book will stay with me for a while. Incredible stories, each completely unique and original, but with common themes woven throughout to tie them each together. Pangs of motherhood, femininity, ancestral heritage, desire, greed, and regret. This book reminds us that the choices we make in our lives not only reverberate through the world we’re living in now, but through future generations to come. Just like the stories, we are all linked.
This might be the best collection of short stories I've ever read in my almost 34 years of life.
