I was very disappointed by this story. I was so in for a scary story with an LGBTQ+ theme, but it simply didn't deliver. It was more like a romance, which is a letdown when what you want is something that will send you chills down the spine.

I read this for the QueerLit Readathon, round 6.

This book was cute and felt geared to a young audience. It was a ’Life Should be like this” kind of story.

There was a disconnect between the story and the tonality of the telling. It was like it couldn't decide what it wanted to be, a ghost story or a romantic comedy. I'm not saying you can't blend the genres if you want, but if you end up doing it unintentionally,it doesn't really read well. At least in this case.

There also seemed to be a lot of developmental material missing, like backstory for Nicole regarding her childhood and upbringing that would explain some of her hasty decisions, and any romantic development between Nicole and Darla. It's set that they're together, okay, but at Christmas there's stuff that happens that really highlights the fact that, as a reader, we really don't see/get any substance of that relationship. It wasn't believable and I couldn't get invested in them, really, or Darla's family.

The ending was quite meh and anti-climatic. So..all in all, the concept could've been interesting, but the tonality was off, the characters & their development needed work to make me care about them, and one last thing? Not really sure how this screams Christmas. Probably could substitute Valentines Day or something but with snow and it'd work just as easily.
